Title: 2.5 diesel non starter Post by Andycan on Apr 4th, 2013, 11:43am Hi I am considering buying a 2.5 scorpio but the owner says that when you turn the key it will not turn over. He seems to think it may need a new starter motor. Is this a common fault or could it possibly be a relay or something else? |

Title: Re: 2.5 diesel non starter Post by bernard_slade on Apr 4th, 2013, 1:11pm when the key is turned to start do the lights dim ?that would indicate starter connected but could mean a siezed or otherwise broken engine and real big money-if no electrical response could be a pats problem where it thinks its locked and immobilised . i thappened to me once and the AA couldnt sort it nor could another guy who turned up to recover me and the local garage replaced a 20 amp fuse and all was well but they wouldnt tell me the fuse number they replaced |

Title: Re: 2.5 diesel non starter Post by Andycan on Apr 4th, 2013, 2:39pm Ok talking to the seller it seems that it begins to turn over and then the starter starts clicking which hopefully narrows it down a bit. |

Title: Re: 2.5 diesel non starter Post by Simmo on Apr 4th, 2013, 2:57pm One classic problem is a battery with insufficient charge to actually START the car as opposed to turning it over. :) |

Title: Re: 2.5 diesel non starter Post by Scorpio on Apr 4th, 2013, 8:16pm Andycan, i was going to see it this weekend, workload permitting. So busy at the moment. Still, ideal for spares though. After speaking to Ian yesterday it does appear to be a starter/solenoid fault but without seeing it in person I can only take the owners word whether it cranks over or not. Matt's offer of a starter is a good option to start with. Also, as Simmo mentioned the battery on the VM has to be A1. |

Title: Re: 2.5 diesel non starter Post by Andycan on Nov 16th, 2013, 5:03pm the key should still unlock your car door and if you recharge the battery or put another one on everything should start working again but the computer will have to relearn how to run your engine smoothly which takes a short drive or on tickover for a while with a few revs now and again Andy |

Title: Re: 2.5 diesel non starter Post by Andycan on Nov 16th, 2013, 11:11pm The key should not need to reprogrammed unless you have changed the locks. Where are you we might have a member near you that could pop round and help if they are not too far away. |

Title: Re: 2.5 diesel non starter Post by Andycan on Nov 16th, 2013, 11:12pm Are you talking about the key or the remote? |

Title: Re: 2.5 diesel non starter Post by Matt on Nov 17th, 2013, 9:00am If you have the keys you should still be able to open the front doors or boot. Being a p reg its 50/50 as to wether it has the pats system. Do the keys have ared square on the end of them? Can you hear any relays clicking when fitting the new battery? |

Title: Re: 2.5 diesel non starter Post by Andycan on Nov 17th, 2013, 11:18am When you connect the bettery the alarm will go off as the car might think that someone is trying to break into it so you need to put the key in the door lock and turn it towards the back to unlock it and the alarm should turn off. You turn the key to the back of the car to open the doors and forwards to lock them. |

Title: Re: 2.5 diesel non starter Post by Simmo on Nov 17th, 2013, 11:27am Robert the key programming your father meant is here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/pats.htm). The alarm horn is behind the battery so if you're annoying the neighbours it might pay to disconnect it! There is also an alarm switch on the bonnet slam panel so you could tape that down to ensure it is closed while you are trying things. As Andy suggested earlier if you put up where you are someone may be willing/able to help you. :) |

Title: Re: 2.5 diesel non starter Post by Matt on Nov 17th, 2013, 4:17pm im pretty sure you have to lock and then unlock it to stop the alarm, where are you located, someone here may be close enough to help? the 2.5 to start with same engine setup as the granada, the M reg i had was a bit of a hybrid of the 2 models, but ive seen nothing later then an N reg with the 2 bits, as yours has the red key and red chip it will be the latter setup |
