Title: Heater Matrix Replacement
Post by scrappydoo on Nov 27th, 2013, 8:05pm
Heating on 1998 Scorpio 2.3 Ultima had been progressively getting worse just in time for winter!

Thought I'd flush it through but on trying to complete this task the plastic was so brittle on the entry/exit pipes from the matrix that one of them has broken clean off!

So now I need to replace the matrix and being a climate control vehicle it requires the 285mm matrix and have been reading all the heater matrix threads on here to et some tips on the job.

Ford want silly money and even at fordpartsuk it is £176.

I have found this one for this very good price:

Just wondering what people thought and if there's anything else I might need to buy to complete the job?

Found another for OK money that appears to be the correct size:

Get ready for a big job. It's as if the car was built around the matrix!!!!!!

Did one years ago on a Renault 25 so I'm prepared for the worst!  ;)

Well I've ordered that 305mm one so shall hopefully get some pictures at some stage.

Be very wary of doing the job. I have done in the region of ten matrix replacements, all for SPICKIES SCORPIO . It requires a complete interior dash  and centre console removal. Please remember when these cars were built they did not intend them to be taken apart, therefore it is easiest thing in world to snap plastic fixings.

… and be prepared to have some left over screws and bolts if you forget where they came from  ;D

Took me 3 days to take apart and put together again but, when I got to it, the matrix was a simple 2 screw 5 minute change over  >:(

Having difficulty getting to the matrix. Initially tried the heater box removal but this would not move as I cannot get the main vent pipes off so went for the brake pedal swing to the right way but find the steering column is in the way with this technique!  ???

Sorry Scrappydoo but as i said in previous post removal of dash and entre console is only way. Using this method i could do a change in approx 4/5 hours.

Dash is all removed and heater box is out and matrix out but the matrix was the wrong size. Can't find anyone outside the dealer network (and over £150) to sell the correct sized one so sent the one I had back and will be dremelling the heater box tomorrow to enable fitment of a sierra one I got for £25 from local factors.

Tried to get new clips for the heater ducts at the side of the box that goes to the rear passenger areas but they can only be ordered in batches of 20 and they're £2.50 each!  :o

Another thing I can't get is the gasket for the bulkhead faceplate for the matrix pipes, will have to bodge the remains of the one I've got.

Gasket for the bulkhead faceplate can be cut from foam sheet available from craft shops such as Hobbycraft  ;)

Right an update!

Matrix now replaced and heaterbox refitted. Managed to reuse my old faceplate gasket via superglueing it back together! Also managed to find the rear passenger duct retaining clip centre pins too, so no need for any new ones of them either. Only issue is in order to get at these clips I've had to remove those ducts completely from their positioning but on attempting to refit them I'm struggling!

Does anyone know where and how the rear passenger ducts that attach at the side of the heaterbox fit? I'm struggling to refit them beneath the carpet...the diagram I've seen on the sites matrix how to seems to show it fitting into a bracket under the seats but I'm fairly sure these don't as they haven't got the bend in the pipework to do so!

Mine are just as shown in the diagram:
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/matrix7.gif

Run under the carpet along the side of the transmission tunnel then to the middle of the footwell & push into the box section under the seats.

Dave,

So I take it there's a hole in the carpet on the tunnel where it can comes back out under the seat? Haven't been able to locate that yet.  ???

Hi Simon

In front of the seat the heating trunking stays completely under the carpet all the way from the heater box to the steel box section under the seat. The carpet goes over the steel box section & is cut along the rear edge of the box section. The trunking protrudes a little through the box section into the rear footwell so the rear part of the cut carpet tucks under it.

Hope that makes sense.
Dave

Thanks for that Dave, will take a look.....just hoping it's easy to reaffix!

Should be easy, as far as I remember it just lays on the floor & is a loose fit in the hole in the box section.

Still can't see the box section where this ducting is supposed to push fit into  :(

The box section is part of the floor & goes from the side of the car to the tunnel. If you get in the back of the car & look under the front passenger seat this is what you should see:

Dave, Great picture and I know exactly what I'm aiming towards now but I still cannot see how the ducts can be routed towards that under the carpet though!  :(

Just wondering if the easiest way to fit these ducts is to come direct from above rather than sliding them in next to the heater box route.  ???

Ended up removing the drivers seat to get carpet up to see where the ducting went and low and behold it goes in front of the seat under the carpet and I was trying to route it along the tunnel towards the rear!

A lot of dash back together but can anyone please check their scorpio and let me know the type of bolt (torx or philips/posidrive) and if you're feeling really helpful the length that goes into the top left hand corner of the glovebox shut position on the dash panel.

Also following the guide for instrument it states the following:

"Release fascia crash pad at the top (three screws below the windscreen) the side (one screw by the passenger door, two nuts behind the glove box, one screw in front of the steering wheel) and the bottom (two screws in front of the gear lever)"

Is the screw in front of the steering wheel actually the one to the right and slightly lower than the steering wheel that's covered by the lower fascia (one with bonnet pull integrated).

Must admit I was puzzled as to why you had problems with the duct as that’s how it’s shown in the first link I sent:
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/matrix7.gif

I don’t remember a screw in front of the steering wheel.
Whenever I’ve looked at the matrix page I’ve not been able to see reference to the screw in the glove box, I’m now wondering if that’s a typo and should say something like two nuts behind the glove box, and one screw in the front of the glove box.
The screw I mean is shown here no 25 page 6 (LHD shown):

Now I do feel silly but on removing it I thought they'd come from further up the tunnel which they obviously hadn't in hindsight!

That link you've flashed up has answered my question, it is the one that get's covered by the lower fascia.

Thanks everyone especially Dave!  ;)
