Title: 1996 cosworth starting issue
Post by Erich_Honecker on Feb 25th, 2014, 3:58pm
Hello

My 96 cosworth has been standing a while, 3 months or so, and wont start, battery is good, all fuses mentioned in other starting posts are ok, put some fresh fuel in but the car just turns over and will not fire up. Electrics seem ok, everything else is working. Im considering getting some easy start and spraying in the intake manifold

Pats not flashing, using red key to start. Alarm is working, horn goes off when I try to start without deactivating it. Any tips please, I have an obd2 code reader somewhere and will try and see if there any codes if I can find it.

Forgot to mention fuel button in the boot is pressed down.
Thanks

Yes, scan it first. See what codes it throws up. May have some older codes stored so delete them first.

Can you hear the fuel pump running when key turned to pos 2?  It should run for a couple of secs to prime the system for starting

When the battery was totaly flat earlier today, I put it on charge, whilst it was charging I turned the ignition to position 2 without starting, the fuel pump was whirring for sure.

Now after charging the battery there is no noise coming from the rear of the car when turning ignition key to position two. I tried disconnecting the battery for a few seconds to reset everything but the pump doesnt seem to be priming, I am looking for my code reader.

Old-Fashioned!    Spare-plug in one of the coils, is there a spark?   Are the plugs getting wet if you crank it for a long time?   Camshaft or Crankshaft sensor?   With the jaguar, if the crankshaft sensor is goosed, the tacho' doesn't flicker when cranking!   Dirty fuel somewhere?

Ive run out of time to fix this for now, could still do with any more input ready for when I am next near the car.

Ive had a look round the wiring in the engine bay, seems ok, slight power stearing fluid leak has eaten some plastic covering over the wires below but the insulation for the wires looks intact. Dont want to scrap this motor as I think its really nice, hope I can get it sorted sometime soon. Really wanted to get it running today and take it abroad. :(

Agree with PJ here...........

Back to basics..........

Check first to see if you have a spark, if it is cranking over it should not be an immobiliser / PATS issue.

If you have a spark next disconnect the fuel feed line at n/s inner wing, and get a friend to switch ign on, fuel should gush out of feed pipe for a few seconds as ignition goes on................please take precautions like no naked lights or sparks while doing this test, and wait a few minutes for any fuel spilt to evaporate before carrying on work !!

Do these 2 simple tests and report back results !!

Then we can help further

I came across fault previously of cranking and non starting. Was PATS fault.

Hi Adam,

That's unusual, most Scorpios with PATS, the PATS controls the earth to the starter inhibit relay, so unless someone has linked the relay wiring out, or possibly the inhibitor / selector position switch is shorted, then the car should not crank when PATS immobilises  ;)

Cheers Dave

Hi Dave,

Yes, the DTC read: Signal not received from transceiver.
Transponder was then replaced but still same fault.

It appeared to see the key at first but then fail to verify key.
This particular fault did result in crank but no start.
Yes, you are correct that if it cranks it shouldn't be PATS.
However, after you reflashed with PATS off, all was well.

Thanks

Adam
