Title: 1998 24V electrical gremlins
Post by Uwsdutchy on Mar 26th, 2014, 9:14am
Hello there - my Cossie playing up.

Sometimes, when driving, the instrument cluster, a/c, sunroof, indicator lights, cruise control, window wipers just stop working, collectively.

Everything goes blank, but dash lights remain on. Radio still works, car keeps running! However, when you switch the engine off, it subsequently refuses to start (half second burst of the starter engine, not enough to start the car). Battery is full, all the various fuses check out (both boxes). Car is bone dry - always stored indoors.

If I turn the ignition on & hotwire the starter motor with a screwdriver, the engine starts without a hitch. However, now the occasional problem persists (great - in Lux - driving to NL) - engine runs fine, but not a lot of electricals...

Any input very welcome - not having indicator lights, window wipers & having to drive around with a rather large screwdriver is freaking people out :-D

Regarding the non starting,it sounds almost as if the ignition switch is at fault whereby when turned to the start position the ignition circuit is disconnected temporarily, some thought and trawling of wiring diagrams would be needed to diagnose the rest though.

Thx - been picking at the ignition switch with this thought. All appears well there.

What happens is that literally 80% of the dash shuts down, all dials to zero, no more wipers / indicator lights / electricals for the power roof, climate control blank... All this with the engine running as sweet as a nut!

This would suggest that it is either the loom behind the dashboard or a connector block if there is one as the starter only works on the furthest position which returns and all the other things that go wrong are on the normal driving position and if it was that position that was wrong then surely the engine would stop

You could check the main fusebox multiplug it uses an open hinge for location, if it’s not correctly located you can get strange intermittent faults as some of the pins barely make contact. Details here:

Check it very carefully, it’s so easy to get it wrong. You may find a little dimple on the corner of the fusebox lid doesn’t quite meet the fusebox in that area if it’s not right.
