Title: wandering steering
Post by georgeodyphotos on Apr 22nd, 2014, 4:14pm
Whilst on the M4 over Easter, I experienced an alarming 'snaking' when changing lanes at about 70 mph. It was a bit like the effect experienced when towing a caravan in a crosswind. The steering seemed to have a mind of it's own. What should I be looking at please guys?

How worn are your tyres?    Was it whilst changing lanes over some 'overbanding'?   Just for starters anyway!

Don't know what the M4 is like but you can feel like that on the M6 inside lane due to grooves worn by HGV's.

Might sound crazy but have you checked the rear wheel bearings ?

Thanks guys for all your suggestions. Will check all these but I think maybe radius arms sounds likely.

If it isn't speed variable PAS, a bit of wandering at higher speeds is normal (I had a Executive level Scorp, means minimum equipment), it's because the PAS is 'too good' at those speeds so makes the steering very sensitive. Seriously you have to concentrate!

If it's the speed variable PAS then could be that it's stopped switching over to the increased resistance for high speed. So is too sensitive for high speed (but correct for low speed).

Just a wild guess!
