Title: TPS woes. 24 Valve Estate
Post by Nunnspoet on May 14th, 2014, 11:42am
Hi everybody. Well, I have just done an OBD scan and the TPS is at fault.

I rang Ford. They quote a new one at £116. +VAT.

I recon the last one cost aprox £60.

What a rip off. Heartbreaking.  No wonder Scorpy owners lose heart.

Mike,

In my experience the parts prices for all Fords are daft - like when we had our Mondeo, I was spending on average 80% the price of parts that I would on the Jag and sometimes twice as much as I would on the ZT, because of this I went over to pattern parts where I could get them (I know that doesn't help with the TPS). I'm not totally against Ford, but it's something which sticks in me still.

Any chance you might be able to get some kind of contact cleaner into the sensor? On one of mine I decanted half a can of Servisol contact cleaner into a jar and soaked the sensor in that for a day or so, pulling it out occasionally to actuate it a bit - although it's a sealed sensor, quite a bit of cleaner got in through the hairline gap between the body and the shaft and improved it a lot.

Depends if the conductive tracks are just worn out though I guess :-/

Bruce.

more likely the wiring in the valley is at fault.

Thanks for your replies, Bruce and Martin.

Ford don't have any after all so I'm searching around, and have the option of buying a second hand one from Spikies, bit of a gamble so in the meantime I'm just hanging fire as somebody on here may come up with one or know where I can get one.

There were no other fault codes besides those I expected; The 2 post Cat sensors, and the EGR which I disconnected.

The wiring in the valley was rewired aprox. 3 years ago so I believe I can rule that one out.

Surely the TPS for the 24valve is common to other cars?

Any ideas anybody?    ::)

Take a look at the Intermotor website : http://www.intermotor.co.uk/smpeurope/Intermotor-Catalogue.asp

Might be P/N 20055 or 19983 which are both listed as for the BOB

20055 = Ford P/N's

FORD 6325680
FORD 6667704
FORD 6854782

&

19983 = Ford P/N's

FORD 1669755
FORD V93HF-9B989-BA

WOW!  ::)  A flood of information, no less!  Great stuff.

I am just waiting for a phone call to see whether a CO. I have just now contacted has one. If so I will put there name on here.

The part No is V93HF 9B989 BA.  That is the same as the last one on your list Scorpio Mike.  I will give them a call if I fail in my present search.

Not so sure about sussing out the OBD lead, Graham,
::). Trouble is that  methinks I have it sorted there is a space in time before I have need to use it again during which holes appear in me memory box through which knowledge dust disappears  :-/.  But, thanks to this forum and your help, I muddle through.

Thanks   :-*

Mike

You don’t say what the problem is, is the TPS dead or you just have a code.

Have you’ve tried disconnecting the battery as that can be all that’s needed:
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/obd2scan9.htm

Assuming you’re using the same lead as in the above link, if you look at the TPS output as shown. With the ignition on, engine off  when you press the throttle it should move smoothly from about 16% up to about 90% (just guessing a top figure, I think my 2.3 is about 88%).

Keep at it Mike, you'll get there :-) I admire your perserverance!

Look here... http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/easyguide.htm

On the "Data" tab choose TPS sensor (no need to choose others in the list, but you can if you like)
Then click on the "Graph" tab and start the run, and you'll see the graph move as you move the throttle. As Dave says, it should be nice and smooth between the min and max figures suggested.

You can resize the graph to make it easier to see but it is a bit fiddly from what I remember (its been a long time since I played OBD!!) but just looking at the numbers on the "data" tab should provide enough of a clue.

Good luck!

PS it is a PWM/ISO Alex Peper lead so, please do chip in one and all!!  :D

Thanks again , Dave and Graham.  Really good advice and as the sun is shining I can't wait to get on with it. I couldn't do anything for the last few days as I have to keep the Laptop connected to the mains as its Bty. is kaput, and me is scared of rain on electric cable.

I have ordered a new TPS from "Ignition Car Parts Ltd," Hopefully that will arrive today. But in the meantime i will "play".   :).

I'll be back!  :D

A bit of an  update:

I had to wait for my new TPS to arrive so I could do nothing.  However after clearing the fault codes I took "The Beast" for a day out along the South coast back roads between Seaton and Sidmouth, then back to Chard via the main roads.  :).  Performed like a dream, but a bit intermittantly lumpy on tickover which has been going on for a long time (years). Then I had to park her up as the MOT was due. Then it rained. Then me health played up, so no word possible.

I did a read-out Monday evening:  1x post Cat faulty, and EGR fault, which I expected.  ;D.

Then, engine stone cold and ignition on I monitered the TP:  At rest the reading was oscillating between 16.4/5percent. Throttle fully depressed it reached 87per.cent. On the first scan, taken a few weeks ago this reading rose to 93percent.  Not quite right, which does point to the TPS.

Interestingly, I did as above with my other (Ruby) Cossie Estate and returned:  At rest 16.3percent. Pedal to the floor 97.something percent. I remember thinking "perfect!  ;D. And Ruby ticks over perfectlly.

The Beast has had a bad tickover for years now.  I replaced the TPS years ago, and have been puzzled ever since about this lumpy tickover. A thought; I drove her regularly for weeks recently covering quite a few miles on major trunk roads including M ways and during this period the tickover improved greatly. She was then left standing for a few weeks. Then the recent probs.  Mmmmm.

I await your comments folks.

Mike    :)

Hi Mike,
if your TPS is reading about 16% at idle then that's about right.

Have you looked at the IACV? I know the site suggests that it's pretty robust in the 24v but I had occasional hot stalls for years and it's completely gone since I swapped it over with a spare I had - I also replaced the gasket (40p) which may have been the problem all along. Maybe the valve's sticking. You can take the IACV apart and 'lubricate' the spring, as described HERE (http://www.granada-and-scorpio-online.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12204). I'm assuming you've seen THIS (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/pooridle.htm).

This is probably a bit obvious:
Ruled out air leaks? Is the trunking between the MAF and VIS  secure - I know mine can be a pig to ensure it's airtight and have to carefully check it's properly connected after cleaning the MAF. Have you had a look inside the air filter housing (no oil/water collecting at bottom) and the little filter (not horribly gunky)?

Had a similar problem with one of my 24v's a few years ago, tried everything above and it turned out to be an air leak due to a fine crack in the plastic T piece just between the back of the engine and the bulkhead.

:).  Great advice and ref. points Paul. I have an old IAVC somewhere and will have a play. Really good stuff,  8)

And thanks to you Glyn  :). I have sprayed WD40 around that area (Engine cold) with the Engine running and had no change in revs.  Still, when I raise the centre piece of the Inlet Manifold to change the TPS I will check those pipes.

Bit of fine weather on the way?  ::)

Well, I have fitted the new TPS. and whilst doing that checked the Vacume hoses, all looking good  :).

I clearedl the Codes and checked the TPS.  Ignition on Engine off: 17.6% rising to 96% as throttle pedal pressed to the floor.  Are these figures ok. The high reading looks fine to me whereas the base reading looks high?

She has been parked up for 3 weeks whilst I waited for the part to arrive, the weather to get better etc. Her MOT is out so can't go for a drive..

What do you think folks?

Mike
