Title: A4LDE Solenoid
Post by surfeur574 on Jul 4th, 2014, 2:41pm
Hello everyone,
Thank you for having me in your community ford scorpio, I am the happy owner of a scorpio 2.5 TD 180 000km year 1998, I do a lot of repair above, recently I restore the automatic transmission A4LDE, it work well for 1 month and now it no longer wants to spend the 4th gear!
in a first time I suspect the solenoid that you can see in the picture attached. In a second time if the solenoid works he then can the problem comes from the PCM case

My question is;
Are anyone here has already had this problem and how did you managed to solve it?

I'm french, sorry for my English writing
Thank you!

HI and welcome to the site, is the cruise control working ok, if you have it. The person you need is dave, he is the auto box top man.

Thank you, yes I have a cruise control that works, today I did all the measuring

1 verification of the selenoid.:
The coil of the solenoid gives 6.5 ohm which is very good and gives thermoresistance 0.9 Kohm what is right. I contacted the solenoid directly to a battery the result is a "plop plop" I concluded that it works but I can not be sure.

2 Verification of the electrical supply to the solenoid.:
Two wire feeds the solenoid coil, one originates PCM case and the other source of a cluster of positive son. After measuring the son are good conductors.
To check the power supply I meusurer both son with a voltmeter there is 6.5V. I drove the car watching the voltmeter and electric voltage does not change even 70 mpH you can read 6.5V. I find it strange. to complete the tests, I used my second solenoid that works as well, I plugged in place of the voltmeter to see the reaction, I rode with the solenoid in hand and I see no reaction even at 70 mph in 3rd gear.

I finally think the problem is in the PCM case, when you think?

It's worth a try if you have another PCM but I doubt it, try applying 12v on and off on solenoid whilst driving in 3rd that will rule out a gearbox issue if it now has 4th gear.

Are you absolutely sure it is actually missing 4th? ..............

There are certain faults that give you an "Overdriven 2nd" instead of 3rd, so in fact you are really missing 3rd gear, (Overdriven 2nd is very close ratio to 3rd) !!
Does it seem 'late' going into 3rd ?

Thank you for the advice. You're right, I just realized that I roll with the 2nd Overdriven.

also when the 2nd gears engaged there is a slipping for 2 seconds then the speed re-engaged.

Today I did what you said, I rode with a battery in the c o ckpit to put the contact on the solenoid of the box while driving. but nothing happens, no reaction.

That is telling you that the fault lies within the gearbox itself...........

First thing to check is that there is no stuck valve on the 3rd gear shift circuit, (remove valve block and it's separator plate to inspect it's inner workings.

If it isn't a valve block fault it will most likely be a direct clutch fault inside the box.

I clean the valve body, some valve was stuck but it did not change the problem, the problem is inside the box, I removed the box to inspect everything and I have nothing to of innormale I just reassembled with new seal, new clutch, new washer, I checked the line spacing which is good.
I adjusted the clutch bands;
clamping 13.5Nm
2 turns back to the overdrive band
2.5 turns back to the intermediate band

I put together the box and surprise! Still the same problem! and even worse the second gear engages for 2 seconds and de-engaged to stay in first gear, I can have that second in manual position. reverse is slow to engage and sometimes it does not engage.

now I do not know what to do

I have a technical manual on A4LDe information, there are interesting schematic on the partial electronic management, and schematic of the hydraulic management.
When I have the time I scan the technical manual for those who are interested.

progress in the search for known problem, I measures the pressure line but I do not know if it is right or wrong if it
Here are the steps to 900 rpm:
P: 3.9 Bar
R: 4.9 Bar
N: 3.9 Bar
D: 3.9 Bar
3: 3.9 Bar
2: 3.9 Bar
1: 3.9 Bar
Here are the steps at 2000 rpm:
P: 4.1 Bar
R: 5.5 Bar
N: 4.1 Bar
D: 4.1 Bar
3: 4.1 Bar
2: 4.1 Bar
1: 4.1 Bar

Even with the rear wheels raised, the second speed does not cling.

Is anyone here would interpret these measures? Dave?
I will be ordering a valve body kit with boost valve & sleeve and shift kit a4ld junior. I also noticed that in the master rebuild kit that has served me restore the box it was not there the "seal ring center support" the "seal ring carrier before" and "Direct drum seal ring" so I 've ordered too.
I was told that my model of scorpio is only 5 copies in France, it would be a shame that I did not manage to repair the gearbox.

thank you for your help

Transmission Rebuilding is a specialist business, I've been 27 years in the trade and still learn something new every day ;)

I'm not trying to be funny or awkward here..............

But as you've had the box apart twice now, plus the valve block, then I'd suggest you take it to a proper Transmission Rebuilder, because you are obviously not seeing the fault, and have now created another problem !!

Line pressures look ok, reverse boost is fine, but line pressure is not the end of the story, only a guide to healthy pump and regulator circuit.

Cheers Dave
