Title: power steering reservoir scorpio 16v 2.0 ultima
Post by jls1936 on Jul 13th, 2014, 6:44pm
I was driving yesterday and when I turned the steering wheel I could feel  some resistance, I pulled up and checked the level in the reservoir. It was very low I topped it up with fluid, it took half a bottle. I drove home about 20 miles and it seemed ok though I can still feel something through the steering wheel. I can not see where the leak is coming from. I have it booked in next week for mot. Is it dangerous to keep driving.

Check the hoses are tight under the reservoir as one of them often leaks.
If air gets in the system it often feels coarse for a few miles (not unusual for the steering to feel rough after it’s been on the ramps for an MOT).

Fluid could be leaking from the rack into the gaiters - try squishing them gently to see if you can feel any fluid in there - should only contain air.

Mike is absolutely right. If you can't see fluid obviously leaking then it is a classic case of it going into the steering gaiters. This means a seal has gone and regretfully its a replacement rack. :( IF it goes totally you'll soon know about it as the steering will have no assistance and you'll need to be Sampson to turn the wheel. ::) If you keep topping up and it is being stored in the gaiters one or the other will burst and chuck fluid everywhere.

Just back from local garage. They say a seal has gone and I need a replacement rack. Price quoted- Pas rack -188.33  Pas fluid -25.98 labour 120.00. Total with Vat  £ 401.17. They use someone local for supply of rack but would be happy to fit one that I supplied. Could I scource a cheaper replacement rack, and if so how do I guarantee it is the correct rack for my car.

jls.  I have just spoken to a company called Kelly Bray (http://www.kellybraysteering.co.uk/pages/scorpio_24017.cfm) who have helped out our members previously. The chap thinks they have one so I suggest you ring them and see what they can do for you. They have a speed sensitive one shown for £99 so if they have one for your car they should be able to 'do you a deal' was the reply. ;) Ftiting it is not difficult...even I managed it!.Details are on the site.  :)
Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/steering/PASRack.pdf) ;)

There are only two racks. The speed sensitive one fits the Cosworth.

I've dealt with Kelly Bray before and the service was very good - they even arranged to collect the old rack.
Rack replacement not difficult, Simmo & myself did mine a few years back.

Hello Jonny  ;D Why do I always think of you when steering racks get mentioned?? ::) I nearly quoted that phrase when I first replied. Hope all is well with you and yours. Has your lad got his dad's flair for mechanics?.

Hi
Got my car back with new rack and MOT cert. The mechanic said he could feel a little bit of a judder but it could be that some air was in the system and could sort itself out. However he did say that if the fluid levels had been low it is possible that the vanes on the pump had been damaged! as I'm only averaging 3000 miles a year I hope I will not need a new pumpfor a while.

jls. IF the car has been on a ramp with the wheels dangling as I suspect it has this juddering can occur. You need to turn the steering from full lock to full lock a few times and that should stop it. EITHER slightly raise the front so the wheels are just touching and go from lock to lock. DON'T hold it on full lock as that will put undue pressure on the seals. OR find some loose gravel and use that to ease the load on the tyres when turning.  :)
