Title: HELP PLEASE - 98 Cosworth Dead as a Dodo
Post by jumper on Sep 6th, 2014, 6:40pm
Hi Guys
Have had the Battery of the CAr for a while - It was running great before I laid it up.
Re-fitted the Battery - good volts 12.7.
All electrics seem to work.
PATS light goes out - No Codes
Warning Noise sounds if I try to take it out of Park which suggests Park Sensor is working
Engine will not turnover.
Have bypassed Start Inhibit Relay and this allows the starter motor to turn fine but will not fire - suspect that PATS is still influencing spark/fuel
Fuel Re-set button seems OK

Tried dis-connecting and re-connecting BAttery -ve.
Tried locking/unlocking
Any Ideas Please

Can you hear the fuel pump run when you switch the ignition on?  Fuel pumps fail if not used for a long time.

EDIT:-

Wait, are you saying that the car won't even crank?

Vaguely remember others having similar problems due to missing a sneaky 3rd black wire on the battery, easily missed.
Good luck!

Hi Guys Thanks for the Quick response

Yes the engine will not even crank - will only crank if i bypass the Start Inhibit Relay - the return line for the relay is via the Transmission Range Selector and then the PATS so looks like the PATS is not providing the earth to activate the relay - the relay is OK

Graham T - Thanks Have previously looked for any missed wires and can't find them

Any other ideas?

There is a PATS by pass if you want to try it.
You will need to contact me directly for the method.

Hi Snoopy the PATS bypass does the same as I described in my post on Sept 7th. Have now permanently bypassed the Start inhibit relay and so it will crank but the b****r will still not fire.
Is there a way to check the fuel pressure?
Seems to be sparking OK

Phil

No it doesn't.

Can you smell fuel from the exhaust pipe when cranking?  If you can't then it isn't getting any fuel.

If you turn the Ignition on, after a couple of seconds the PATS LED should go out, which it does, so all is well with PATS.

Cranking issue is more likely to be selector pos switch or a bad earth somewhere, double check the ones on the battery it is very easy to trap one under it so you can't see it.

Regarding effects of PATS, once you get it cranking, the engine should still start and run even if PATS is actively sending theft detected signal, but then it will cut out after 2 - 3 seconds, with PATS LED blinking ;)

PATS does not influence spark, but ECU will cut injectors after 2 - 3 seconds of engine running, (not cranking), if it doesn't get a "Key OK" signal from the PATS Module.

What I have found with Cosworths that have stood a while is that to get them to start and run the best procedure is to hold open the throttle about 20%, then crank them, and once they fire up then back throttle off gently until you get down to about 1500 rpm, hold it there for a while, as they have to re learn their idle settings ;)
