Title: Difficulty refitting rear hub, rear bearing replac
Post by janthomasz on Jan 10th, 2015, 8:10am
Hi I have just refitted the rear right bearing on my scorpio 96 and have issues trying to install the rear hub! The one with the tire bolts on.. Its like the bearing it should fit into is just a little too tight! Any tips, advice or special tools I need!? This is beginning to be frustrating. I have tried putting the hub in the freezer to maybe shrink the metal a little bit but to no avail. Please help!  :-/

If I seem to remember that it is difficult to get it past the seals on the rear hub. it DOES take quite a lot of force to get it started. my experiences are HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/rhubs.htm)

Yeah thanks! ;) I actually used your guide during the repair. Everything went kinda smooth except this hub insertion step.  :'(

The interference fit does appear to vary, mine were exceedingly tight & had to be assembled off the car then fitted hub/carrier complete. A press is the best way. Cooling the hub & warming the inner bearing may help but didn’t make a lot of difference to mine.
The most important thing is that no pressure is put on the tracks or the rollers & everything is scrupulously clean (including hammers drifts etc).

Make sure the shaft which goes into the bearings is clean and has no ridges of gunge on it & also make sure the splines in the hub and on the stub axle are clean and free from grit etc...clearances are tight.

Press is the only way to do this job nicely, then fit the carrier and hub to the arm, and the shaft should be a sliding / very light tapping fit into the hub spline  ;)
