Title: 1995 Cosworth Gearbox problems
Post by Whatever on Feb 7th, 2015, 5:17pm
This morning while in a hurry to pick up a friend at the airport my Cossie acted up... Started her up and let it idle while scraping of the ice of the windows... Drove of and the thing would not shift up from first, and it also slipped badly. 3000 rpm produced approx 20-25 mph. Car ran perfect yesterday eve, has plenty of oil in the box, not burnt and nicely red. Reverse works just fine, no codes or annoying blinking lights anywhere.
I suspect either some electrical gremlin or perhaps a stuck valve or internal leak in the poxy box. Any ideas?

Edit: I set out in to the cold and dreary night to see if there was anything further to be learned and lo and behold the thing started right up and everything is back to normal... All the gears are there, no slipping and the kick down works as it should leaving me more puzzled then ever... ???

Wait for Dave2302 to reply, or send him a message.   Be very patient he's a very busy fella.   He can only be described as an expert on Autoboxes, and does a fantastic re-build, (not re-condition) on any Auto-Trans'.   I know because he did mine, Perfectly!

Hi,

Here ya go and you didn't have to wait too long LOL..............

I suspect it is the "Selector Position Switch" on the side of the Transmission, where the selector is, these act up in bad weather as they get water, salt and all manner of other sh i te in them and as it freezes it can squeeze the contacts apart and mess up the resistances.

They are a bit of a bas tard to fit esp on the Cossies, and you do really need the right tool to align them correctly  ;)

Cheers Dave

Great! I have had my suspicions about the selector switch since it sometimes doesn't move freely but needs gentle persuasion to move...
Thanks for the tip!

Hi

If the gear lever is stiff I suggest you read this and oil the linkage ASAP:

Hi,

Yes, get that free first, as if it's stiff you may not need a switch, switch can mis read as linkage flexes when seizing ;)

A liberal application of WD40 seems to have cured the ailment!
