Title: 2.3 won't start Post by Bobbit on Feb 10th, 2015, 2:01pm Hi guys, I hope someone can help me with this problem. Started and used car yesterday, stopped at shop, when I tried to start it again it turned over very slugishly but eventually started. Whent to start it this morning and all it does is click, I have had no needles flying round dials as is usually the case with a dead battery. Put voltmeter on battery and it shows 12 volts, battery is about 1year old, headlights are very bright and do not go dim? It is a 1996 2.3 estate. Any help please Cheers Bob |

Title: Re: 2.3 won't start Post by Tompion on Feb 10th, 2015, 2:35pm Hi Bob Might just be a bad earth or poor live connection at the battery or the starter solenoid. Check all heavy cable connections bearing in mind some stay live. First try a jump lead from the battery earth to a good earth on the engine – if it is a poor earth that should make it turn over better. Dave |

Title: Re: 2.3 won't start Post by brds on Feb 10th, 2015, 5:28pm If it clicks, the solenoid is OK. It's probably a dirty connection on the brushes which is easy to fix. You just need a short piece of plastic pipe, the same diameter as the commutator when reassembling the brushes onto the end plate. Cut a notch in the end so that you can assemble the brushes onto the end-plate and then slide the plate & brushes from the piece of pipe onto the commutator. You can even do it without taking the starter out. |

Title: Re: 2.3 won't start Post by brds on Feb 23rd, 2015, 5:15pm You could try giving it a tap with a hammer - you've got nothing to loose. |

Title: Re: 2.3 won't start Post by Bobbit on Feb 23rd, 2015, 6:58pm used two hammers no change. i think its going to be a new starter cheers Bob |

Title: Re: 2.3 won't start Post by a900one on Feb 23rd, 2015, 10:14pm You need to check that you. are getting 12v to the starter when you turn the key to start, small wire. You can also bridge the big terminals on the starter, BIG sparks, to see if it trys to start. If nothing happens with second option, starter dead. :o |

Title: Re: 2.3 won't start Post by Bobbit on Feb 24th, 2015, 2:32pm Thanks for that a900one, I am not up too well on electrics, I have a voltmeter , I put the red probe on the solonoid small connecter but where does the black probe go :-/ still no sound at all when key is turned, just dead, all lights etc all ok. Cheers Bob |

Title: Re: 2.3 won't start Post by Bobbit on Feb 25th, 2015, 2:39pm Hi guys, Shorted two terminals out on starter motor, big flashes like a99 said, but nothing else, so it looks as if starter has had it :-/. What do you guys think. Cheers Bob |

Title: Re: 2.3 won't start Post by Andycan on Feb 26th, 2015, 12:20pm sounds like the starter then so you can either replace it or change the brushes and clean it out. |
