Title: 98 Facelift Scorpio Ultima 2.3. Automatic Gearbox
Post by pede on Oct 28th, 2015, 1:45am
Hi All,
I am searching for advice as to why my gearbox is acting up in the way it is.
When the car is cold, It dosent like going into reverse, it mis-fires to the extent that it has cut out before now. but after driving the car forward for 5 minutes it works as it should, I have suffered with it over the summer but with winter imminent I may have to decide the cars future. I have recently had a replacment fuel pump fitted ( Thanks Big Steve ) The sills have just been repaired for the MOT, as well as the front brake pipes, last week one of the coil packs packed up and needed replacing. I have spent over £1000.00 pounds on the car in the past three months, and the coffers are almost empty. I am thinking if the Gearbox is in need of a rebuild, it might be time for us to part company.
I begrudge getting rid of the car because it has always been ultra reliable, up untill the fuel pump issues, and the ride and handling speaks for itself. I am hoping its a relay or something simple(cheap).
Many Thanks in advance, Great website for all Scorpio Owners. Clearly one of the best cars Ford ever supplied.

It’s not uncommon, mainly on cold mornings with a stone cold engine. My previous Scorpio did it for years. I just made sure I didn’t have to reverse first thing on cold mornings. I found if I did have to reverse on cold mornings I’d run it for a minute in drive & usually it would be fine when I put it in reverse. I’d usually have a couple of codes when it happened, one being rev limit reached, I assume it cuts one coil pack to prevent over-revving (not that it is over-revving, just getting the wrong information from a sticking solenoid or whatever).

Here are some threads about it:

If you need a spare 2.3 auto gearbox...I have one sitting in my garage  ;)
It came from an S reg car with about 90k miles - I checked the fluid before I bought it as a spare and it was a nice cherry pink colour.
Collection only as it is a bit heavy...drop me a PM if interested.

"I have one sitting in my garage  ;)"

For those unfamiliar with Mike's storage arrangements this is an adjunct to his famous shed!! ;D

Before you say a word Mike you knew there would be a comment! ;D

Aye Simmo you're right!   It's like, "I have a spare frying-pan if you need to cook".

Anyway, presumably you have extensively cleaned the MAF sensor, this sometimes has adverse effects on the gearbox.
