Evening All,

Yesterday, in order to transport a 3.6 m wooden Roof Batten for a mile to my home, I opened the roof fully to enable me to feed the batten through to rest one end on the rear parcel shelf - the other end was about 4 ft above and just behind the front bumper - I then slid the roof closed until it just touched the batten to hold it in place. I got home OK, removed the batten and closed the roof. When I tried to open it this morning, the motor made a loud "chattering" noise with lots of vibration but neither the "slide" nor the "tilt" function worked.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Sounds like the nylon gears have stripped :-[

Keith, if this is the first time it has happened don't use the mootor until you have stripped it to see how much damage has occurred.
Remove the motor and take off the black plastic cover (4 or 5 clips around the outside and a couple of screws.
There is a white gear driven by a metal worm gear on the end of the motor. Examine the white gear. If there is a lot of wear you will need to locate a replacement gear. Rocking horse doodoo. Maybe someone could 3D print these gears??
If you find a new gear, or yours is not too bad, you need to put the motor back together with reinforcement for the (probably cracked) black cover. I used a thin pice of steel made to cover the whole area with a hole in the middle for the drive to the sunroof to pass through. I needed a second piece to make up the thickness as one side is recessed compared to the other. I've got photos somewhere and I'll post them up as soon as I find them. I feel the reason the plastic gear strips is because the black plastic cover, meant to hold the white gear in place, is too weak. The gear lifts and eventually slips on the worm gear. Once it starts, it's downhill all the way. If yours has only done this the once, you may get away with it.

Some of the high spec mondeo had the same motor, I think thats what I have. You will need to check the roof moves freely as rust on the seal can stop it moving. I expect when you shut it on the wood it over strained the gear. ???
