This happened on my 2.3 Ultima - the A/C is on by default but if you remove 1 of the small blue relays from the passenger side fusebox it disengages the clutch and the pulley will just turn without trying to turn the compressor.
Can't remember which relay but there are only a couple to choose from.

hi guys yes I did remove the relay blue one r24 after the compressor nearly caught fire no kidding there was smoke and it was screaming .I think the bearing in the compressor its self is broken removing the relay did stop the clutch from running  but I think the heat from when it got really hot done the bearing in the body its self....I don't want to replace the unit  due to cost . that's why I want see if I can fit a belt from a car which doe not have air con thanks for your fast reply

I put a non a/c belt on my Granada scorpio after the a/c compressor seized up.  Did your model/engine size come without aircon, if yes, should be able to get one easy. If not, cut the old belt and put around the pulleys, missing out aircon pulley, with the tensioner about half way, if you follow what I mean. This will give you some idea of length.

This might help (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/drivebelt.htm)  details of belts etc.

It looks on mine as though you can just about bypass the aircon with a shorter belt & leave the aircon in place.

There are some details here but it looks as though pulley sizes may vary so you may have to wedge the tensioner & measure what length you need:

The pump isn't that difficult to replace (I did a couple in my time), you just have to make sure you get a goodun (second hand) & use new 'O' rings (they are green) on the in & out pipes, as old ones, although they look okay, believe me, they won't make a good seal.

Hope this helps  :)
