Title: reverse gear problem
Post by Torbayboy on Jan 8th, 2018, 2:09pm
On my 2.3 ghia saloon had a problem this COLD morning with no drive.
This has happened before having had o/d light flashing while queuing in traffic in the summer, only used weekly so that may influence matters.
On starting up and initally reversing seem a bit sluggish, engaged drive OK and had a little jerkiness but took up the slack, went to reverse up my (steep) drive and had no drive at all for a short while, then reverse took up the slack and went back a little.
Horrible noise from car with no acceleration much bumpiness and jerking and no backward motion, engine would rev in N but on engaging R would only tickover.
Tried going through the box and letting it settle in PRND21, and managed to get good drive in D.
On the flat now and R seems to have a bit of go in it.
Left the car for a while (went out in the cossie instead!) came back to all functioning fine, have now reversed up my steep drive, and parked on the flat bit at the top, fluid level OK colour a bit off but not smelly or burnt.
Anyone have a spare working box?
Thanks  Roy

Roy, have you gone through The relevant section on here? (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/faultfinds.htm)

The other point is about checking the fluid level. Details Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/autogearbox.htm)
This article was written by Eric R one of the founders of the site. :)

It sounds more like a wiring issue.

Although this doesn't exactly match your description there is a known issue where if you try to reverse too soon from cold in cold weather the engine is lumpy with no power & won't rev. It's actually only running on 2 cylinders & there may be an error code along the lines of rev limit reached.
Clearly it hasn't over revved but engine management would appear to limit the engine to protect it from the reported over rev.
My previous Scorpio had this potential problem for years, I just avoided reversing from cold. If I did have to reverse first in cold weather I found letting it tickover in drive for a couple of minutes before selecting reverse would avoid the problem.
I wouldn't be too influenced by fluid colour, the advice on the website was written when the cars were much newer/lower mileage.

Hello, thanks for the info, it does seem to be a cold only problem losing drive occasionally, done 300 miles in it the other week ran sweet as a nut!

As for mileage it only has 65 on the clock so is just about run in I suppose, will adopt your policy of letting it run before reversing in future.
