Title: car vibrates
Post by Torbayboy on Apr 6th, 2018, 4:35pm
95 cos saloon, just done the gaerbox mounting which was well shot now have vibrations through car floor at idle and speed - seems worst around 3000 rpm, exhaust doesn't seem to be touching anywhere, fuel consumption OK (for a cos) performance fine and no rough idle or funny gear box happenings.
Seems to possibly coming by back seat floorpan, no worse driving than at idle or revving up in park, help! is probably the right word.

Check all the joints in the prop shaft for play / wear.

Hi Mike, would this still happen in park, if it was propshaft?

Propshaft does not turn when in Park so unlikely...

Check the 2 rubber engine mounts - you will find them each side near the exhaust manifolds where they fix to the front subframe. If your rear gearbox mount had failed it is a fair bet the front engine mounts may be in a similar condition.

Thanks for help, any part Nos or pictures to help me find replacements, as I reckon you are right as the car was not vibrating at all on the ramp in neutral with "spanner man" taking the slack up on the gearbox mount, so now we've replaced that the other vibration is showing up  = hasn't slowed it down though!!

No idea if the engine mounts are the same across the Scorpio range or different depending on engine fitted - probably worth checking with the parts guy at your local Ford dealer - who knows, part might still be available but no idea of the cost.

Did find this one on ebay for £42 : eBay item number 323086210460 or a used one for a 2.3 eBay item number 263589147905 for a lot less.

I think the finis is:
1027468 for 24V

1027379 for DOHC

Someone in the States on Ebay selling 1027468 for silly money I won't bother with the link ::)

On the 2.3 the big dished washer under the transmission crossmember has to go on a certain way round but as far as I can make out it doesn't apply to the 24V.

Just Googled 'Ford 1027468' and came up with this :

Obviously a pattern part rather than genuine Ford.

I think there is a bit of adjustment (slotted holes) in the transmission crossmember, have you tried moving it about.

Hello, paid to have the work done, but as always happens with scorps a can of worms is spilt!
Feels as though the engine is directly connected to the chassis, much more prevelent now as before the g box mount was obviously taking up some slack, bought a stock copy part from fleabay from the guy in Portugal, will ask if he can source the engine mounts as you guys seem to think that is the cure - always willing to listen and learn.
Thanks  Roy

Seems as though the exhaust was clamped to or near the gearbox mounting, spanner man looked again at his work and, as the exhaust was rubber mounted a short distance away removed the mounting nearest the gearbox mount.
All much better now - looks as though work done by previous owner caused the problem which was highlighted by the gearbox mount failing.

Again thank you all for your help, looks as though Scorpio prices rising nicely now with coswoths on flea bay over 2k.
