Hi,
Another problem, the old girl is sure feeling her age.- This time the temperature gauge is up and down, when idling goes to the middle position - but heater output even on setting 29 is barely warm, the faster I go the colder it gets and temperature gauge goes back to nearly zero.
I suspect the thermostat, can any one shed a light on this before I have the thermostat changed and the system flushed out.

I'd say you are on the right lines Podge. If you've had no issues with heat before I'd just change the 'stat. :)
Be sure to get the correct one. I did my 2.0ltr once and the part from the factors did not fit correctly so I ended up going to Ford for one.
Found the receipt from 2011!
Part No. 6994257 and the rubber sealing ring 1092262.
