Title: Leaking pipe behind front bumper - 2.3
Post by Xander on Jan 23rd, 2019, 3:39pm
Hello all, hoping you can assist with a problem on my 2.3 saloon.

I have recently discovered a leak patch on my driveway, that coincides with the driver's side of the front bumper. I presumed this was from recently adding water to the washer reservoir so thought not much of it.

2 weeks later, I added more water to the washer reservoir, and the patch was still there. Thinking there was a split or hole in the washer reservoir, I checked underneath the car with a torch and swivelly bathroom mirror, but it appears to be intact.

Following the water line along the edge of the bumper (in front of the driver's wheel), showed that there is a small damp patch on the inside of the bumper that was leaking down and accumulating on the edge, causing the patch.

I moved around to the front of the car, looking to the left of the towing eye to see if I could find the source. Sure enough, there appears to be a small break in a pipe, the water that had been there the longest had gone white coloured, but it was still dripping gradually.

The best way to describe the location, is as 2 pipes join, forming a 'v' shape with a clip just above the left side of the 'v'. If someone can find a Ford explosion of pipes located behind the driver's bumper fog/indicator, I can identify it properly, but I am struggling to think what these pipes are tied into (I am not a mechanic or overly mechanically minded, I am more at home on changing bulbs!!)

Hopefully I have described that correctly, and someone can provide a solution.
Alex

Does your car have headlight washers ?
Sounds like the headlight washer plumbing.

Hello Scorpio_Mike

Yes the car does have headlight washers, I thought they were just caps originally but I have been proved wrong.

I have just been out now to check them with a relative, the passenger headlight washer functions fine, but the driver's one rises up, spits only a very small bit of water, then goes back down again.

So what is the solution for this?

Hi Alex
This is a 'Movvy' problem.   The pipe that goes to the washer jet is the wrong size!   The original pipes to all Scorpio washers are slightly thinner than the pipes to the pump.  (to give better pressure to lift the nozzle out of the bumper, to do with 'flow-rate')   Because the pipes in their position get 'brittle' the person replacing them presumes they are the same size as the ones to the pump.   Then what happens is they spread and start to leak under pressure, or when they get soft with use.   You'll probably need to replace all those lower pipes with the correct diameter.   You'll need to find someone that knows his 'hose-sizes'.   The passenger side should be ok, I did it some years ago.

Hello Peter

That would definitely explain it. I will speak to the mechanic we know that is around the corner from me, he is well clued up on finer details of cars so may be able to source proper pipes? What diameter pipes will we be after?

Will keep you informed.

Thanks  Alex
