Title: Starting problem 24v Cosworth
Post by Paul-Minter on Aug 26th, 2019, 11:37am
Hi everybody, long time since I have been on this site.
I started the car got about 100yds it cut out and picked up then cut out all together.
I have checked out all the fuses and relays as stated in fault finding and it could only be no fuel or electrics.
I am now in the process of elimination starting with the fuel pump, on turning the engine over there is no smell of petrol, I thought I could just disconnect the fuel line under the bonnet to check, can someone tell me where to check,
Thank you Paul ???

Hi Guys I have been able to eliminate the fuel pump by getting an electrician on to it so I have fuel.

Next step I have no spark which led me back to the coil pack and first looks the condition of the wires from the loom to the socket on the pack were bare where the insulation had deteriorated so this will have to be repaired, I do not want to change the whole loom!  Any ideas folks?

I then was able to get a coil pack from another identical Scorpio and she fired up, thinking I had resolved the problem the next time I started the car I am back to no go.
Question is there another reason that this pack should go down, I had made sure the four wires were not touching!

Is this a common fault, kind regards Paul

Quite likely the insulation in the loom will have failed in more than one place.
Insulation failure is a common problem.
Only cure is to strip it out and repair.

I concur.   Fuel-Loom, brittle wires all goosed.

Umm, a long shot, especially as you say you have checked the fuses and relays:

Right.  Having played, and faffed about to the utmost of my pathetic abilities I decided to call out the RAC.  the guy checked the fuses and relays in the Bty. side fuse box and discovered that the Relay situated nearest the Bulkhead on the left hand side, as you look from the front of the car, had failed.  So he fitted the similar relay from my other Scorpio and hey presto! Everything as should be. Perfect.

I believe it is the Main Power Relay: 12v  70amp and is readily available from Auto Electrical outlets.  I purchased 2 straight away.

Good luck Paul.

Mike  :)

Thanks everybody, my son in law has found a company that will supply that section of the loom fitted to the connector which is on order but it comes from the States, so we can splice it in. I will keep you posted as we go.
Thanks Nunnspoet i have exchanged those relays you mentioned, alas it is not them.
The next thing has it blown the Coil Pack!
Kind regards Paul
