Losing the plot. As far as I can remember the fuel flap becomes " locked " when driving. Put some juice in but forgot to close flap. Got out to close it with engine running not thinking that it cannot be shut flush on account of the projecting plunger that retains the flap closed. No plunger observed projecting out. Removed actuator, plunger is free to move in and out. Ah, something broke. Disassembled it. Motor runs but I cannot see for the life of me how the thing works mechanically. There is no physical contact between the gear wheel and the plunger. No bits fell out. Anybody else played about with one of these.

I've not opened one of those, if it's any help this is the inside of a boot motor.

thanks for image but some fell on stony ground ! the fuel flap actuator is not as straight forward as this one, less going on inside insomuch as less components. from your pics it is easy to see how it operates. I assume the motors in these actuators run two ways, forwards and reverse, hence the three rails for a signal to alternate the direction.

From what I remember the tracks on the boot motor are largely irrelevant - I assume the design was for something else. Power pushes the plunger out, when the power goes off the spring pushes it back. The worm on the motor has a course spiral so it can be driven backwards by the gears.

red herring. never believe everything you are told. when I acquired the steed all those years ago the initial owner informed me that amongst other things, when the ignition is on, the fuel flap and boot lid are locked. this is incorrect, only the boot lid locks. the fuel flap is only locked when the car is locked. when I checked the motor and workings of the actuator I connected the power the wrong way, the large gear wheel rotating in a clockwise direction. the correct rotation of this gear wheel is anticlockwise and the locking action now becomes clear, the protruding peg camming the plunger forward and then backwards. phew. please do not tell me that the fuel flap does lock when the ignition is on !

You're OK Just checked mine. The flap is only locked when the car is locked not when the ignition is on.
I suppose the chances of anybody nicking petrol when ignition is on are remote.

Good to see the issues cleared up.
Just one small point re the boot. With the right programming kit the boot lock can be disabled when the ignition is on. This is known as the Taxi mode for obvious reasons. ;)
