Title: Wiring problems car not starting 1996 2.9 12v
Post by johneisen2001 on May 31st, 2021, 12:25pm
Hi, i've got electrical issues going on. My car hasn't run now since January. In an attempt to get it going I called out the RAC which in fact made it worse with no ignition now after the wires were distributed. Before the RAC I had lights on the dash I was getting fuel and spark but nothing else. Wires going to the injectors have gone bare and the wires going to the tfi sensor don't look good either. Over time the running of the car has got worse with misfiring going on and running very rich.
If I disconnect the engine loom how easy is it to disconnect from the gearbox. Is there anyone out there in this country that could remake my old loom with my old connectors. I really need to get this car going as it's parked down a side road. Any help advice much appreciated. Thanks.

My experience is with a 2.0L but for what its worth - There are at least 2 looms (maybe 3 for the 2.9). The one for the engine is named the fuel cut-off loom, the other is for the gearbox. Both are via big plugs on the LHS of the engine bay (looking from the front) beneath the steering oil reservoir so fairly easy to get at.
You should be able to get the engine loom off fairly easily but its easier if the car is on ramps to get at the crankshaft sensor. The others connectors aren't too bad but some are fiddly to get back on.
For the gearbox loom, you would really need the car on a hoist as you need to lower the exhaust.
They probably both need replacing but for now, most of your problem sounds like the engine loom so I'd concentrate on that first as you maybe able to do that one yourself.
It took me a week to rewire both looms using the old connectors. Some of the wires are low-voltage signals and twisted pairs so be careful. There's lots of info on the site if you are OK with a soldering iron and have space to lay them out on a peg-board.
It's really a labour of love and would be expensive professionally.

I made a start disconnected the loom around the engine isulation gone on one bit show bare wires. Will tackle the loom part going to the gearbox another day.

Good show - starting is the hardest bit. I'm probably telling you how to suck eggs but I'd recommend labelling each of the sensors so you don't get muddled and, it makes things easier when re-wiring and re-installing.
Before you attack the loom, it's worth drawing up a spreadsheet of the connector to sensor connections with wire colours as some of them may change within the loom. It'll stop you making mistakes and makes continuity checks easier. There's plenty of info on the site wiring diagrams to cross-check things. Pay attention to any twisted pairs.
Only do 1 wire at a time and add some slack to make it easier when re-installing as you may not be able to thread it around the engine easily as per the original.
I cut the wires back to within a cm of the connectors, soldered the new wires and used heat shrink then wrapped it insulation tape with a final covering of aluminium heat resistant tape.
As I said, it's a labour of love.

A very long shot: My first Scorpio was a 2.9 12v Saloon.  I loved it.  Anyway, if your Scorpio is a Saloon check the wiring from the rear lights as I hazily remember that they somehow are in contact with the boot lid brackets and can short out causing all sorts of problems. There was a lot of discussion on this site as I remember.

Best regards

Mike  :)

You are right Mike.  If the loom is not clipped back correctly the boot arm will catch it. Often the damage is not obvious until the tape has been opened up and the wires visible. ;)

Yippie! You have just made my day Simmo.

Let's hope that that will sort your problems out johnneison2001, so that you can get back to enjoying your Scorpio.

Happy day everyone.
