Title: Airbag Light - instrument panel/dashbord replace
Post by fix-and-foxi on Nov 25th, 2021, 9:31pm
Hello,
my Scorpio 2.0 16V Estate, 1996, it needs the MOT. The airbag light is flickering -mostly if the car is "warm" and with a tap to the dashboard it is going out, for a few seconds. A few years ago I soldered the two pins form the instrument panels as described -and it works till last month.

I want to replace the complete instrument panel and the question is:
Can I replace it generally to each another panel -or is the panel specific to the construction year/type of the car -2.0, 2.0 16V, 2.9....

Have had many times the air bag light on, I find it clears with use, do you use the car regularly? this seems to work very well  IMHO,or by pushing the lower left clock assembly, as you know the biscuit boards are (not as good as they could be).

If you change the clocks they will read the mileage on the new assembly not the original mileage on your car.

If you have had the clocks out before you will be aware of the last bit to free is by the drivers air vent is a pig before the plastic "wood" panel comes out, you can actually get the clocks out with the last screw of the air vent still in as Xander did this on  "pearns" my dear ole cossie saloon- gone to devon now to be ripped apart.

Many threads on here to check the part No on the back of the unit-seem to remember not use the diesel clocks, a check through these should shed light on it as I asked the same a few years ago.

Good luck with it, perhaps explain to the tester that this is a common fault with thes cars (if he's not a big headed demi god like our local torbay one), after all it's not a new car.

A common cause is the 'clock spring'. Go to The Fault finder page (https://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/faultfinds.htm) and scroll down to the relevant Air Bag link. :)

Hello,

thanks for your fast replies. My native language is german, so it could be some misunderstandings...

to Torbayboy: The Scorpio is my bred and butter car. It is used weekly for urban traffic 30-40 km each trip, for highway use 300km or more monthly, additionaly heavy transport up to 2.0to per trailer. But the cars is parked outside in ever raining germany.

Generally the last monthes the airbag lamp flickers after warmed up, equal by short trips or long distance. It means, that the lamp flickers after warm up when restarted.
With a little tip to the dashboard the flickering stops for a moment. Using the steering wheel has no effect. After cooling up (overnight) all worked well -until the car is warmed up again and restarted.

Maybe the contacts/pins on the board will be corroded inside the  printed circuit board. Before the last repair /resoldering no defects are discernible, also by using magnifier glasses. But after resoldering it works for a few years.

By buying a new dashbord /instrument panel I am a little bit feared, that it was written something about leak out damping oil.

I do not know how the panel was storaged about the decades, and what happens by shipping via DHL.

to Simmo:
The clock spring was not changed. And because of using the steering wheel has no effect to the flickering led, I do not think that there is the fail.

My Scorpios relationship is a love-hate. I never had a car, that makes so much trouble. But if it runs, it do it very well.

E.g: Last year at the hottest period I have to transport very great and heavy material -steal beams-.
The trip goes up to 200km (one way) to the belgian ardennes ( 6x200km), very strong to climbing steppish hills, it was 35° C hot, the trailer about 7mtr. long (3-achs) and full loaded by 2.o to. The Scorpio runs in first gear, 5000 UPM, about steepish distances up to 10km.

I was fix and foxi about the temperature by dissambling the steal construction (under corona duties), and feared the car will going to heaven -or hell.

But it works fine.... and so it have the right to get my healing hands to be repaired.

i think I would try a resolder of your panel, the pins on my panel were dirty and took a bit of soldering, plenty of flux. Tapping on the dash effecting it would point towards the solder joints.

Did you cut the ends off the pins after soldering, if not the case may still be pressing against them which could break the solder joints again.

Hi Tompion,

sorry for delay, too much to do.

No, I do not have cut any pins.... I only resolderd the pins/contacs.

But if I have to desmount the panel I will check it, many thanks.
