Title: Overheating Cosworth........... Post by Scorpio_Dan on Jul 21st, 2023, 8:45pm Earlier this year poor Scorpy overheated - dodgy original thermostat I thought. Replaced the stat and thought - yep - all done........... Nope. She got hot after a few miles and refused to cool down. Haha I thought - noisy water pump. Fitted new pump with the mods needed and new hoses to reposition the stat. Tested, heated up and fans come on. Fans go off......sorted again yes?? Nope, 3 miles in from journey home from work, she brewed up again. Top hose heated up from cold, stat opens, bottom hose gets hot. Engine overheats. Rad is cold. No water flow it seems. Anyway, heads off to check for blockages. Heads are off being skimmed now, I have unblocked and flushed the block, pipes, back flushed heater matrix and drilled the head waterways as it was solid!!!! Dan |

Mine is also overheating and i have just bought the new stat available from CBS. Now I am worried. Roasted my forearm to second degree burn when it overheated and I stupidly thought I would be faster than the steam/water coming out the bottle. I had never seen skin melt off before. Better now but thought that it had iced initially as it was during winter, I really should know better than that. But now I'm getting idiotic as I get older. Anyway hope this fixes it and hope mine is not the same. :-/. John. |

I fitted that stat from CBS also but I replaced the pump so required the pipe mod. The missus not too happy as Scorpy is down again, cue her insults! I have a centre prop bearing to replace at the same time, as the exhaust manifolds are off etc I think it would be easier to get to it. Tonight I have been cleaning up the block and valves etc. I do hope you do not have the same issue, it's a messy job. Dan |

My missus is always at me to get rid of things especially my 1979 Scimitar which I have had sitting in rebuild mode for some time now mainly due to house move mind you. Gonna try and see if i can get a good water channel cleaner through my cossie engine before I do anything else see if I get a load of crap out of it. Good luck with yours. John. |

Title: Re: Overheating Cosworth........... Post by cobrascim on Aug 6th, 2023, 5:33pm So new thermostat fitted and engine flushed through twice with the Wynns coolant flush. Filled with fresh antifreeze and hopefully this will cure the overheating issue. MOT on Tuesday. Still got a battery drain issue. When reconnecting the battery via my meter it starts at 0.5A dropping to 0.2A after a few seconds. So I will need to trace this issue next. |

Scorpy is back together now , i had issues with the rocker cover gaskets not sealing so it got stripped down to fix this. I had a problems bleeding the coolant, removed the thermostat and drilled a 3mm hole in the outer ring. Cured this issue. I need to get some confidence back in her now. :o New windscreen also fitted finally. Cracking job done - it was her first screen replacement. |

These cars should give a lot more pleasure but have usually got to a neglected stage by the time we get them. One of the biggest problems I had when I took the inlets off was disconnecting and then trying to reconnect the EGR valve stupidly mounted under the back end. What a pig of a job that was. If I could re-program an EECV I would do away with a few things. John. |

Title: Re: Overheating Cosworth........... Post by Nunnspoet on Aug 12th, 2023, 9:12am A one pence placed on on the underside of the Inlet manifold and the bracket used to hold it in place sorts it. Same thing where the EGR valve is joined to the exhaust manifold. Ditch the EGR it makes no difference to performance. It is many years ago that I did this to both of my Cossies. It is a simple easy job and it means that if you need to remove any part of the Inlet manifold there is no problem with regard to unwanted air ingress. Happy days Mike |

Tuesday however, the bypass pipe decided to split just above the thermostat!!! AA recovered back to where we were staying. Managed to bung the bypass pipe with a 25ml thimble measure and run the engine with no stat. I fitted the rad bottom hose direct to the pump inlet! |

Just reading through and looking at your pics. with regards to that mondeo thermostat - is that like a unit that comes apart and you can replace the thermostat inside it in the future. It does indeed split so you can fit a new stat or change the stat to a different temperature one etc. It does not fit up in the gap behind the AC pump due to the flanges for the bolts. I have kept this stat with my new waterpump so hoses rerouted to suit. I'll get some pics when I can. Just getting boot sorted after she was hit by a reversing landy. ffs Dan |
