Title: Auto Gearbox Selector Sticking
Post by Benjiwill on Dec 16th, 2009, 12:00pm
Hi, I am new as a member and I am looking for help with a problem on my 2.0, 16v Scorpio estate. I've owned the car for over 10 years but have not used it for the past 4 or more! I finally got round to working on it to get it back on the road. I've replaced all the brakes and suspension, given it a good derusting underneath, and after changging coolant, oil and plugs the engine burst into life without a cough after all that time. Fantastic! My problem however is that it is stuck in Drive. I've checked as much as I know, the brake lights are working, I've jacked it up and moved the rear wheels and that seems to show that they are not locking it. All the function buttons work, E, sport, and Snow. The side button makes a dinging noise when you push it in and try and pull it back. I've been undearneath and given the linkages two or three doses of WD40, but it still will not move more than a fraction out of D.
Because of its location, I cant get it recovered to send off to the dealer, so any suggestions/thoughts would be great.

Go to This page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/autogearbox.htm) and also check out the 'buttons' on the left hand side of the page re  Auto Gearbox Manual. Look at gear selector in that section.  ;)  Welcome to the site and good luck with the car.

Thanks, that sounds as if it could be the problem. I did oil them with no effect a couple of days ago. i'll try again when it stops raining! Can I give them a tap to encourage movement?

To be honest i've always managed to free it by gently bumping the selector back and forward and it eventually frees off BUT i have seen them break the mounting for the linkage on the outside of the box and it means lowering the box to replace it..

The red arrows point to the link rod connection points, the blue one is where the pivot is thats causing the bother, its just a spring clip holding  it on, if you pop it off you'll be able to get at it better with the WD40

Unfortunately you'll have an exhaust in the way just to make it more difficult ;D

Oh! and Welcome to the site  ;D ANOTHER Yorkshireman!!

Thanks, that's great it looks as if I need to get that bit higher up with the lube, then try again to move the shift again. The car is outside, and its pouring down here so it will have to dry up a little first!
Thanks again.

I went to collect one of mine from the paint shop on Saturday, and discovered that someone had managed to break the rear ball joint off where it attaches to the selector arm,so I lost a few pounds (weight) dragging it across his yard and winching it onto the trailer after grovelling about underneath to knock the park lock off  >:(

Best to go steady then, after getting it going straight away, I don't want to break this. I am really keen to drive it again now though.
