Title: Heated screen switches
Post by Tompion on Jan 20th, 2020, 9:54pm
The heated screen switches have LED's for the on button & filament bulbs for illumination.
Last time I did some I took them apart & changed the bulb to LED with resistor.
This time I thought I'd try using grain of wheat bulbs without taking it apart. You can get these at model shops or ebay etc.
There are other voltages so make sure you get 12v.
Remove the climate control panel & prise the switches out. Remove the plastic lens (it just clips in) to get at the bulb cavity.

If you need to change the LED you can just pull the button off (quite tight).
The original illumination bulb is plain with a tinted boot over it, I've cut it out for the picture but you can leave it in.
There's a slot in the base of the switch I fed the tails of the grain of wheat bulb through, you may need to enlarge it if the tails are thicker. I soldered them to the base of pins 1&4. I left the tails long with a view to splicing a replacement in rather than keep heating the pins.

I did the top switch in the next picture slightly differently - I pushed the wire through the hollow rivet & soldered it to the common terminal of the LED under the button.
The only diffence between the 2 switches is the shape of the plastic key between pins 3&4 to make sure you use the right connector - you can cut it off if you have a good wrong switch to fit.

Lit up.

I haven't a clue how long these bulbs last - we'll see.
