Post by woody1966 on Mar 17th, 2006, 6:09pm
Has anybody got a drivers side rear caliper for a R reg 2.3 Ultima estate? I've tried ringing loads of scrappies with no joy!! Hope somebody can help.....

Is it because the handbrake mechanism has siezed?

Try a little trick to unsieze. might work, you've nowt to loose, it worked for me

Undo the handbrake cable from caliper by loosening the cable right off from adjuster underneath car, undo caliper from carrier and remove pads, replace caliper and lossly fit bolts to carrier.

Now, remove the 10 mm bolt and remove handbrake return spring,

Apply loads of WD40 around handbrake mechanism and gently lever up with large screwdriver, work the WD40 in, lever the mech about 2 to 3 mm upwards. Now clean the shaft and body, I used rag in a tug and pull motion, and apply loads of WD40. Push the mech back in caliper, it should turn slightly as it goes in...work it from side to side, and you should see the piston coming out of the seal..not too much, wind it back in. Do this for a couple of times and it should free the handbrake mech.

If its completely siezed, then obviously a new 1 is the answer, so its worth a try. Now I know a bloke who has scrapped an estate with working calipers, which side do you need? I'll see him for a price. Also, where are you, do you need P&P

or if you fancy some new ones try this link

Thanks for the reply Simon, yeah its the old story of a seized handbrake! I've tried freeing it off but to no joy. It's funny, I looked everywhere for a replacement before posting on here and wouldn't you know it since then I've found 3. Hoping to go and collect 1 this afternoon. Once again thanks.
