As far as I know, the knobs don't come off....or at least they're not supposed to :-/

Quite right, not supposed to come off, can be done from behind, quite tricky & as with a lot of old plastic quite likely to break the clips.

Unfortunately came off quite easy. I got carried away and read the instructions for NON climate control bulb replacement.
