Title: O/S headlight unit urgently needed
Post by DavidBE on Oct 6th, 2008, 4:47pm
Hi,

A year ago I bought a P-Reg (Feb 97) 2.3 16V Scorpio Ultima Auto saloon.

I've just had my first MOT test with it, which it failed on several things. The biggest single cost for the garage to fix everything is the front O/S headlight unit, which has failed on both beam image and light output. That headlamp has often had condensation on the inside, and it appears to have broken the reflector. For the garage to procure a replacement headlamp unit will cost £200 on top of the other things. If I can procure one, though, they would fit it for nothing during the other work.

I hate to play the symapathy card, but last year I developed a severe back problem which has put me out of work, and I'm now subsisting solely on incapacity benefit pending an operation that may make me functional again. I only use the car twice a week to do the shopping, as that's all the getting out of the house I can currently manage. And I simply can't afford this repair bill for the Scorpio including that much for the headlamp.

Does anyone have a spare offside headlamp for a more reasonable price that will fit this model of Scorpio?

In addition, can anyone tell me which of the various models and years of Scorpio will in fact have a compatible headlamp? Will the one off any pre-facelift Scorpio fit? Will an estate's fit?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi David,

Headlights often pop up on ebay for about £20 or under.

Any Scorpio headlight for the 94-98 model should be fine.

Good luck.

Hi David,

As Mike says any Scorpio headlight will fit, the only thing to look out for is if yours has the headlights levelling motor on it or not, some saloons do, some dont.
I expect yours being an Ultima will have the headlight adjust switch beside the lights switch?

Let me know what one you need, I have a couple spare ;)

Thanks for the replies.

I don't have any other switches on the dashboard by the exterior lighting switch, and I'm not aware of any control to level the headlights. So I guess that would mean I don't have the version with the levelling motor on it. Is there anything else to check?

Highlander - could you let me know how much for an offside front headlight unit, including getting it to me (I'm in Wiltshire) and how you'd like payment?

Thanks very much. I'm feeling a bit desperate at the moment. If they can't fix my back when the time for the procedure eventually comes though, I'm pretty much resigned to not being able to run a car anymore from some point next year. But I really don't want to give it up just yet.

Well, thanks to you the headlight should be OK.  ;D I know they're having to put in a new OSR wheel bearing, and they've had to send off for some little original Ford clip to secure the fuel line near the steering wheel. What I don't know is how much they're having to do to the OSR handbrake, which wasn't working properly. They said they wouldn't know whether it needed a new caliper or not until they had it apart. I should find out tomorrow.

Thanks again for the help with the headlight - it's made all the difference to being able to afford this and keep the car on the road.

Well, I've got the new MOT.  ;D

The garage in my village that did the MOT test last week were booked up until the end of the month for repairs, so arranged for another garage in the next village but one to do the MOT repairs to my Scorpio, including replacing the headlight with the one from Highlander. I got the car back yesterday, but the car still had to be retested by my original garage for the MOT on the items that had failed the first time, which was this afternoon.

There was one worrying bit - I could only watch the test from a distance, but I could see the tester fussing around the new headlight. When he finished, he came and told me that while the actual headlight was now fine ... there wasn't a sidelight bulb in there at all! When the other garage had fitted the replacement headlight unit, they'd forgotten to put the sidelight bulb in (or broke it and didn't have a spare handy?). However the tester just went and got a new bulb, fitted it himself, then passed the car and gave me my new MOT certificate.

So I'm re-MOTed, and just in time (the old one runs out tomorrow). Thanks again to Highlander, and to DHL.   :)
