Title: O/S Headlight and indicator
Post by DavidBE on Oct 1st, 2011, 9:07pm
Does anyone have an offside Headlight and front indicator for a P-reg 2.3 saloon (Ultima Auto)?

I'm feeling sick as a parrot right now. Thursday was the MOT, and I was quite sure the car would fail too drastically to be savable and I'd have to scrap her. To my astonishment, it passed! List of advisories as long as my arm, and I'm sure the progressing rust will do for her this coming year ... but at least one more year: I was really happy. A lucky break for once, thought I.

Then this afternoon we went shopping in Ringwood for the weekly shop. Left the car in the central car park and mooched off round Sainsburys. Got back to the car ... and start by seeing the glass all over the ground. Someone had reversed (presumably) into the offside front corner, and shattered the headlight and indicator. The bumper's scuffed up, but didn't break this time. (This is the third time in 4 years someone's reversed into this car while it's parked and broken lights and bumpers, while I never had that happen once to my previous twelve cars!) So much for the lucky break.  :(

So, anyway, if someone has a front O/S headlight and indicator to spare, if you could let me know how much (inc. postage) I'd be really grateful.

As an addendum, I've been driving round with a rear bumper all cracked and missing bits since the last time someone smacked into the car. I'm finding it hard to imagine how a whole rear bumper could be posted, but just out of curiosity, does anyone happen to have a spare, undamaged P-reg 2.3 saloon rear bumper in aubergine, and if so, how much for that?

I've bought bumpers from car breakers on ebay before which they have packed up with tons of bubble wrap and arrived by courier in perfect condition.
Presumably you need the small indicator as your car being an Ultima will have foglights ?
Is the foglight OK ?

Sorry for not replying sooner - I have a very bad back that completely disables me some days, especially the day after  something like the weekly shop.

The fog light appears to be OK, except both the foglight and indicator appear loose. Unfortunately I'm not sure how they are supposed to be secured in, and my back won't let me bend enough to get down to have a good look.

The indicator actually still works. It may just be (other than whyever it is loose) that it is just its cover that broke off, and that's all that's needed for it. I'm not entirely sure as to the construction to know whether it's just a replaceable cover.

thanks for the Ebay link. Pity he doesn't say which of the lights the described faults go with as I only need the offside one. If nothing else is avaliable I may pursue that, but I was hoping for something more immediate as the given length of the auction and delivery time would mean the car wouldn't get fixed for a fortnight, even if I won the auction.

The woman who did it did, actually, leave her details, somewhat to my surprise. (It's sad that I'm actually surprised by honesty.) I'm trying to see if I can source the parts for my garage to fit, along with them touching up the bumper, as I can't bend to do anything much myself, which - if it's a reasonable amount - she'd then pay for. I'm trying to avoid doing this by insurance company as (a) I'm afraid that with full price parts etc, and given the car, either her insurance company or mine will say its more than the cars worth and just give me a few hundred for the car, losing me the Scorpio; or (b) if my insurance company gets involved, I'll have to pay the excess, and lose my no claims bonus, which - being stuck on incapacity benefit for my back - will leave me unable to afford to insure any car next year.

Does no-one here have an O/S headlight and indicator (the sort that goes next to a foglight), then? Perhaps I used up my luck managing to get a headlight from someone here a couple of years ago when I needed one for the MOT.

Have a look at This site (http://www.spikiesscorpios.co.uk/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=23&Itemid=1) for the lights. You could speak to the lady concerned once you've priced up the bits before going ahead. The removal and fitting should take no more than,at most, an hour. ;)

Just got back from my garage, as I am indeed trying to price this up before calling the lady again. She'd agreed I should, as she too would rather avoid the insurance route, if it's not too much, for the sake of her no claims bonus.

I  was surprised (as was the garage guy) to find from our local ford parts dealer that the headlamp glass is available and can be replaced separately. I'd had the impression the whole headlamp assembly, including glass, was only available as one sealed unit. Anyway, the local Ford dealer, it turns out, has the headlamp glass (and gasket and seal), indicator and paint in stock, and I've got a price for my garage doing it with those parts.

Thanks, though, Simmo, for that link, as the entire lights are cheaper there than just the headlamp glass from the Ford dealer, so if she baulks at the price with the Ford dealer parts, I could then see if she'd go for the somewhat reduced price if I source the parts from there instead.

I'm hoping she'll agree one way or the other, as the guys at the garage all thought that insurance companies would think the car beyond economic repair, so I'm really hoping she'll agree to settle this between us. Fingers crossed until I phone her this evening.

If I can just ask for some more advice ...

The lady who damaged my car did not like the price I got from my garage, that included them getting new headlight glass, gasket, seal and indicator from the local Ford dealer (196.80 inc VAT, plus then a can of paint and the garage labour on top for a 335 total), and rather than that would prefer going via insurance which would not be good for me. She did indicate she might agree to settle with me direct for around the 220 mark.

The Spikie's Scorpios Simmo pointed me too raises some questions. While I presume from Simmo's recommendation that I can trust them, the OS pre-facelift headlamp says it's one with the self-levelling motor, and also is collection only. I can't collect, and also my Scorpio does not have a headlamp levelling control on the dashboard. So the first question is: does a headlamp with self levelling motor work in a Scorpio that doesn't have the self levelling controls?

Then the second question. While Googling for headlamps, I idly tried one of those sites that claims to be connected to hundreds of breakers, so you put your needs in there, and any of the connected breakers that have what you want contact you with a quote. I did get one email back, claiming to offer headlamp (entire) and indicator for 81.60 inc p&p and vat, which would get me to what the lady said she would pay, adding that to the can of paint and my garage's labour charge.

The site offering the parts is Motorspares UK, of motorsparesuk.com (not motorspares.co.uk) of Chesterfield, and I am wary. Has anyone here dealt with them? Does anyone know if they are trustworthy? Searching, I can't find any reviews under that name.

Hi David the headlight and /or lens are easyish to replace.
If the foglight and indicator are loose then the plastic frame that holds them in could be broken.

Stixy on here is breaking 3 scorpio's and I am sure he has these things at reasonable prices. He also sends them same day.

Sadly, while I used to do all my own work on cars for many years, up to single-handedly swapping the engine in a Capri once, I now have a  completely broken back and can't do a thing. I haven't even been able to bend down low enough long enough to see what's what with the indicator/fog-light fixings. My local garage is going to have to do all the labour, even for simple jobs I once would have just whizzed through myself.

(One of the reasons I want to keep the Scorpio as long as I can is that it's about the only car that my back is comfortable enough in for me tobe able to drive it any distance, so e.g. I can still do the shopping.)

Is this frame something apart from the bumper? As I say, I can't get down to see (which is really infuriating). Is there a name for it?

Thanks for that. I've posted to that thread, although I note he said he was finishing with those last month. :(

He still had them there at the weekend. Is it the newer facelift headlights you needed? If so I am sure I saw some for sale on here.

The cover thing has the foglight screwed into it and then the cover thing screws onto the inside of the bumper and then the indector slips in from the front and clips in against the foglight.

Hope this helps and I will call Stixy in the morning to make sure he has seen your message.

Hi David, I'm sure I have the pre facelift headlamp and the foglight in my garage. Do yo still need them? Let me know and I'll check for you.  Lee

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, the headlight is pre-facelift.

Yes, I do still need them, and it sounds like I need the cover thing too that Andycan mentions, which the foglight and indicator fit into.

Thanks for any help.

Yes that's what I did following an identical sort of mishap. Nevertheless got a complete headlamp unit off a member here for £15.

Could be the springs on the outside end of the indicator part got squashed up, which is maybe what's making it loose, that's also what happened to mine. Straightened 'em out, fixed a crack with Araldite to keep the water out, sorted.  :)

I'm assuming of course an able bodied owner doing it DIY

This page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/handbook124.gif) may help understand the fitting/removal of the units. :)

Thanks for the help and advice, folks. (Sorry about seeming to ignore replies since Wednesday. Have been out of it for the last two days as I get by on a weekly painkiller patch that I change Tuesday nights, but it takes two days for the new one to kick in during which I just can't do anything much.)

Thanks. I look forward to that. Don't suppose the police would be much amused by me driving around with a smashed headlight.

Thanks, but the bit I'm not clear on is what the indicator (in the indicator-with-foglight type) fastens to at the outside. I looked in the handbook, and in the workshop manual pages on this site, but couldn't see anything showing that arrangement.

Being unable to get right down to look, all I know is that my indicator (which actually works, though the front is gone) is loose at the outside, and will just push back into the bumper if poked with a finger. So I'm not quite sure if its something broken on the current (broken) indicator unit, so a replacement unit will clip in fine; or if whatever the outside of the indicator clips to is broken, so a replacement (which I still need, of course) would be loose too.

Yeah had me scratching me head for a bit as well at first.

What it is the indicator has a tab on the inboard end that clips into a slot in the other half (foglamp bit), (or in my case, the bumper because I only have the simple single unit indicators no foglamps, but the principle is the same. Or pretty sure it's the same).

Where the diagram says "press firmly on the side of the lamp assembly" that's not very clear, really means as though you were trying to slide it sideways, away from the centre of the car, or I interpret it as, insert a screwdriver into the gap, twist gently (doesn't need much) and the tab pops out of the slot. There's a funny 'C' shaped spring on the other side (outboard end) of the unit that keeps it in the slot. Dead obvious how it works once you've seen it.

PS: although if it's lost its front plastic lens cover then could be the locking tab and all that gubbins is smashed up as well so it might probably just pull out. (?) Could just be why it seems loose now

Title: Re: O/S Headlight and indicator
Post by Mike H on Oct 7th, 2011, 4:09pm
PPS: if the outside end is loose suggests the 'C' spring was squashed (like mine was); actually fits into an interior moulding of the bumper, hope that's not messed up, only way to find out is pull it out and have a look. Can always dismantle the good side for comparison. But I suspect the lamp housing is probably weaker than the bumper plastic so the latter is more likely OK, just needs 'new' lamp unit(s).

HTH

Ah.

The indicator is still clipped securely to the foglight at its inside end. The outside end is both loose and sitting further back into the bunper than it should, and pushes back further when poked. That makes me think that the bumper moulding this outboard C spring fits into may be broken.

Although the front plastic lens cover is completely gone, and I think it stood out around the indicator (?), so it might just be the missing extra width of the lens cover that's letting the indicator go back into the bumper. Well, I hope it is. I'll have to wait until I have a replacement, and the garage can look wen they fit it.

Thanks for the info.

Oh rats hope it's the lamp unit that crushed not the bumper bracket bit broken, though that may not be impossible to repair, just extra complication you don't need. Only way to find out is someone open it up and have a look I'm afraid. Well he'll find out when you've given him the new bits to put in
