Hi i need a sunroof motor for my 97 scorpio as mine will barely open sunroof and sounds like a hammer drill.

dcgiw 2009 make sure your sunroof is free to move before fitting the new motor. The roofs rust and that makes them hard to open and strips the plastic gear wheel.

Just in case it's not obvious, or not been read here before, ;D the glass has a steel surround which rusts, it swells out then the foamy outer seal bit (stuck onto the outside) becomes a tight fit and struggles to go through the roof hole. I've found on mine it's the joint at the back that's the most trouble (where the two ends of the seal meet). At some time I was going to rub it down slightly at that point.

There was a recommendation to put a smear of vaseline(?) or somesuch around the outer edge of the glass to disuade water getting in, is that right?

Plus, I have coated the black frame inside (& pop-up deflector arms etc.) with clear waxoyl, oil the cables while you're in there as well, if not already.

Good advice re applying some sort of pressure on the roof as the switch is pressed. Once open then the work begins with grease, oil, vaseline etc

On the subject of rubber seals, my wife has a VW Eos with an opening roof, and dozens of rubber seals. On the Eos forum there is mucho grumbling and worrying about the very expensive lubricant VW sell for these seals.
The upshot is, using silicone lubricants is the last thing that should be used. Vaseline's prob all right, but the point I'm trying to relate is that these seals are not any old rubber and need special care, and they need keeping clean too. My roof has exactly the same problem as Mike H with the seal expanding at the back. On previous Scorps the same thing has happened and I got the dreaded hammer drill effect, so I manually push mine to help it open. I need to do the maintenance and give it all a bit of a seeing to, as described.
But just to pass on a hint from the Eos site, the following was recommended as an alternative to the special lubricant VW offer (called Krytox).
The alternative, brace yourselves now, is called Einszett Gummi Pfledge, (think that means 1Z rubber polish) and can be found on eBay, or here: http://www.autogeek.net/1z-einszett-rubber-care-stick.html
It's a thin milky solution, but the claim is that it nourishes the 'rubber'. Dunno how much of this is cobblers, but it seems to keep the myriad seals on HID's Eos nice and supple and I use it on all my car seals.

It's probably not the seal expanding as much as the lip where the seal goes is rusting to the point of completely breaking up. Trouble is, once the seal is removed, it can be impossible to put back as I nearly found out once :)

I have an EOS as well, and bought the 30ml bottle of oil, £48. I was going to sugest that for the seals on the scorpio roof. I have tried vaseline on on the granada and silicone lub on the scorp, thats was before I got the EOS.

I've also got a Nissan 300ZX twin turbo. Now you're talking! And a mini...in fact I am quite mad.

just to add my 2p worth...maybe once it starts rusting its too late but the cause of the rust is water getting under the rubber seal then it sits in the rim inside and doesnt drain out despite the drain holes in the corners .....pour some water on glass and it disappears in 2-3 hours & not through evaporation

I use a disposable craft knife, slid it under seal and carefully lifted a couple of mm and then forced some silicone grease into the space..you dont want to deform the seal otherwise it wont resit, so best to do when its warm and the seal is more pliable....once done after a shower and a few hours, still a pool of water on the glass.
