Title: Ignition module and wiring loom
Post by TugW on Oct 1st, 2012, 10:52am
Has anyone got an ignition module , the one that sits over the plugs under the cover of the engine. Also, I want a wiring loom. the loom need not be perfect. As long as the wiring is intact and it has all the plugs on it will be useful to me.
My Scorpio is a P reg 2.3 Ultima. Tug

Coil and plug-leads?  Or the full shut-off loom that incorporates the low-tension wires to the coils and camshaft sensor?

Tug, I have a cut off loom if you need one. Cheers Lee

HI LEE. WHEN YOU SAY A "CUT OFF" LOOM, DO YOU MEAN THAT THE PLUGS AND SOCKETS ARE REMOVED? THE LOOM CONNECTS TO THE COILS AND OTHER PARTS BY PLUGS AND SOCKETS AND I NEED THE LOOM COMPLETE WITH THOSE PLUGS AND SOCKETS ATTACHED SO THAT I CAN REPLACE IT OR REBUILD IT.  THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY.  TUG

To PJ Davis. Ideally I need a coil and the plug leads and the full shut-off loom to ensure that I can solve the problem. I have insulated the leads of the loom which had lost their covering . I did this by using heat shrink tubing. However, it is not possible to extend the tubing into the plugs and sockets, so I would like another loom so that I can completely renovate it. Strangely, the engine is running on three cylinders. Strange because the coils give sparks in pairs. So, I plan to replace a coil to eliminate that as a cause.  If one of the HT leads is faulty, that would cause the problem, so I would replace those also. I have measured their resistance and it is between 3 and 4Kilohms which seems reasonable though I have no specification for this. Tug

I would imagine Lee means the whole loom as shown here:

Fuel Cut-off Loom being it's name not what he plans to do to it ;)

My 2.3 went onto 3 cylinders a few months back. Doing a basic resistance test between the terminals of each plug pack showed that the outlet to one plug had failed internally.

Thanks Tompion. I understand . That is very helpful.  The loom is very extensive and my local Ford dealer could not identify it. Is it possible to find a reference number for it?  Tug

Referring to your msg about running on 3 cylinders, can you give me more details on how to emulate the measurement you did. By the "plug pack" do you mean the ignition module? Thanks Tug

Lee. Having been told that the "cut off loom" is the proper name of it, I would like to accept your offer of a loom. Can you tell me the condition and price please? Tug

:) Meant coil pack or ignition module. I just compared the readings between the 2 coil packs. In my case I got no reading to the HT side that has an HT lead whereas the other pack had a reading. I can't find my meter at the moment so can't give details.

There are a couple of second hand ones on ebay, probably others – item 271058031565

The shut off/cut off loom is here (although best to check if they actually have them in stock first):

Thanks Tompion. I have checked the two coil packs and find that one has a resistance of 13 Kilohms between the two spark plug connections and the other seems to be open circuit. Does this tally with your observations? Tug

Just tested a good one and that has a resistance of 13.5K. I have a feeling my faulty one showed no connection between spark plug connections.

Since the meter reading doesn’t show which terminal is faulty & I know the side with the spark plug lead was faulty on mine, I can only assume I’d already tested it by running the engine and sparking both connections to earth & then tested it with a meter to confirm that pack was faulty.

Thanks Tompion. That tallies exactly with my measurement so I now know what to do. Thanks very much for your help Tug

To Leewar. Thanks for the offer. I have acquired a coil and I have confirmed that the leads are satisfactory. The "cut off loom" however is a disaster. All the insulation has perished where it is under the cover. Although I managed to recover it with heat shrink tubing to get the car functioning, I think I must replace the loom. Please tell me how much it will cost and how to get it. Thanks again. Tug

At risk of mentioning it again ;D it may be repaired by cutting the plug leads short, cleaning the strands until shiny all over, dipping in liquid flux then soldering on new wires. Then sleeve the joints with heatshrink. Then sleeve the wire overall with fibreglass or similar based heat resistant sleeving. If you can get it.

Try This firm (http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-onlinestore/home/homepage.php) for the heat resistant sleeving etc. Just a point if you look at connectors they are NOT the same as the Ford ones. I have sent specimens to them and got an authoritative reply.  ;)

Thanks Mike. I did almost exactly that. I imagine that the heat shrink tubing will itself be heat resistant once shrunk. Anyway, I have replaced a coil and all is now running sweetly again. Thankyou for your help.  Tug

Heat shrink sleeving is not heat resistant, being plastic.

Heat resistant is fibreglass & fabric based, or somesuch.

Did mine with 'normal' wire, soldered onto the original bits, then joints heat shrinked, THEN heat resistant over the whole lot. The red stuff here:
