Title: 24v Radiator needed.
Post by andyw2000 on Dec 17th, 2012, 11:36am
Hi, I am looking for a radiator for my 24v scorpio.
I have just bought it and had a few problems with it overheating, I hope its just an air lock but the radiator has a slight leak so just need another one that is water tight to put on.
Thanks
Andy

The 24v rad has a tendency to bulge & leak & can be difficult to get. You may do better adapting a 2 or 2.3 rad, see here:

Thanks for the reply I will have a look for one of them, they are cheaper new so hopefully I will find a good secondhand one  at a reasonable price.

If you look at the advert for Spikies on the front page of the site Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/) he might help if no one on here can. ;)

Thanks for all your help.

if fitting the rad from a 16v car youll either need the header tank to go with it orbock off the extra return pipe the cosworths have on the tank

Thanks, I am thinking of keeping the pipe on the header tank and fitting an inline valve to the end so that I can bleed the air from the system as this seems to be a problem especially with my 24v.  I can just tuck it away when its all out.

And if you want to change the thermostat as well I can confirm this (http://www.cbsonline.co.uk/product/By-Pass_Thermostat_80_Deg_BYST80) is an exact fit and works perfectly.

And much cheaper than the Ford item!

Hi, I have fitted a 2.3 rad to my 24v now which is working ok, I still have a problem though, the coolant system seems to be over pressurizing, on investigation I have found that the middle pipe from the expansion tank that goes to the temperature sensor housing seems to be blocked, the rubber hose is ok its in the housing.
Is there a diagram on the Scorpio site that shows what goes on inside there? I have poked a piece of wire down the metal bent pipe on the top that the hose fixes to and that goes in so far but don't know what happens inside the housing.
When the engines running and up to temperature and pressurized should coolant be coming out of that metal pipe back to the expansion tank? as mine doesn't, I have tried pressurizing the pipe with water and with an airline but nothing is going in or coming out. I was thinking next of putting some sort of acidic liquid down there to dissolve the blockage but just wanted to get some advise first before I did anything.

The cooling system details and set up are Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cooling.htm). Does that help?

Hi, thanks, I have already looked through that section but it doesn't show the housing that i'm having problems with. What I really need is a drawing of the complete system.
I am tempted to just buy another housing and replace it, I am sure coolant is suppose to be coming out or going in that pipe or it wouldn't be there.
The only other thing I can think of doing is buying a tee piece and putting it in somewhere so that the expansion tank outlet has somewhere to go.

You’ll probably do better to start a new thread as not everyone looks in the wanted section.
I have no experience of the 24v but I’d of thought it would be an air vent, I wouldn’t expect coolant to be going back to the expansion tank.

For a diagram scroll fairly well down this page to the cosworth cylinder heads section (not that it gives much detail):

I can't quite recall the exact details of where that pipe connects to the front of the engine, but I am sure that it's an air bleed, therefore if you remove the pipe from the head surely water must trickle from it,if it doesn't then it's blocked by crud.Matt is conversant with these engines and should be able to fill you in.

Thanks for all your help, I left the pipe with a drop of rust eater in it overnight and today got a piece of stiff wire and poked it down into the manifold in a prodding action and eventually it unblocked and coolant came out.
I took it for a drive today and all seemed fine but then the heaters went cold again and when I got home it had lost coolant out of the expansion tank bleed pipe and the system was pressurized quite a lot. I used me bleed valve that I have put on via the now unused second pipe on the expansion tank and got loads of air out so am now thinking there might be a head gasket problem. :(
