PJ,the lower spec cars didn't have a computer screen in the rev counter,and as I remember,had one multiplug less at the rear.I have fitted a higher spec one in a limo to replace a low spec,but blanked out the screen. GOZZ. |

Title: Re: diesel instrument cluster Post by SteveO on Mar 20th, 2013, 10:32am Is there any difference between manual and auto clusters? |
||
Title: Re: diesel instrument cluster Post by bernard_slade on Mar 20th, 2013, 3:31pm on the face of it there is no difference between the manual and auto cluster displays so i am pretty sure there should be no difference in the electrics as the auto box on diesels does not have the overdrive in/out facility warning light seen on petrol autos and that warning light position on the diesel is occupied by an overheat warning light common to both manual and auto models so it looks like there is just a diesel cluster |

Title: Re: diesel instrument cluster Post by Tompion on Mar 20th, 2013, 5:08pm The cluster types are here towards the bottom of the page: http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/instreset.htm They may/may not work on other models but some functions may/may not work. |

Title: Re: diesel instrument cluster Post by Tompion on Mar 20th, 2013, 6:31pm Just remembered the following that may affect whether or not the rev counter works correctly: Under 3. Pulses on the link I posted above - "This check allows the engine speed signal coming from the alternator, (12V V6, 2.5 TDi) or the EDIS (all others) to be measured and calibrated. Should show the following numbers at idle: 26 for 4 cylinder DOHC 40 for 6 cylinder 24V 52 for diesel types 200 for 6 cylinder 12V" |

The usual reason is low voltage ie battery failing. Common issue. :) Look at Fault finder (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/faultfinds.htm) and scroll down to relevant item. :) |

Title: Re: diesel instrument cluster Post by Tompion on Mar 20th, 2013, 8:45pm I know it's not the reason for your needles bouncing so far, but I should point out if you do an instrument reset the needles will always flick round next time you turn the ignition on. |

Title: Re: diesel instrument cluster Post by bernard_slade on Mar 22nd, 2013, 1:14am hi tompion i did the reset check and found i have a type 7 cluster everything checked out as in order in particular the voltage with engine running was 14.3 volts which confirms the alternator is charging but of course does not tell me what the instruments get under crankingwhhen the starter is engaged .a static test with a multimeter shows 12.4 volts but again thats with no load so the battery may well have a weak cell. i have sourced an instrument cluster that is in the post and as sods law goes i took the car out for a short run this afternoon and all warning lights behaved perfectly and as the engine was warm from the reset test it didnt even needle flick when starting--im sure it will all go wrong again next time i start with a cold engine but im making progress |

Title: Re: diesel instrument cluster Post by Simmo on Mar 22nd, 2013, 7:42am Bernard these cars are well known for needing a lot of power to start. In some instances there may be a reasonable level of battery power and the engine will crank BUT not start. This (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/battery.htm) article explains all. :) The button link re Charging test may also help. :) |

Title: Re: diesel instrument cluster Post by PJDavis on Mar 22nd, 2013, 3:12pm 12.4 Volts is not good enough for any battery. It's starting to go when below 12.5. Mine was at 12.3 for a long time, and even got me through the worst of this winter, but on start-up (even though spinning the engine up ok) the needles always went around the dials whilst it was below 12.4.
