Title: Transmission Cooler Lines
Post by FlefasaurusRex on Dec 29th, 2018, 11:06pm
Well this morning as I was making a start on the brakes, I noticed a nice pool of transmission fluid that wasn't there yesterday, sure enough the metal part of the hose that leads into the ATF cooler has split. It was on my to-do list as they were pretty corroded anyway, but I guess now it's more urgent.

If anyone has a set or knows where to get them i'm very much interested.

They were available from Ford but its quite easy job to get some made up by a pressure hose maker. they are standard fittings and should not be too expensive to get made up, OR you can cut out the rotten part and replace with rubber high pressure hose and use jubilee clips.
These pages (http://fordscorpio.co.uk/autotrans.htm) on the main web site give you the PDF Worksop manual for the gear box

A little update to this, I pulled off the rotten lines and took them to my local Pirtek branch following a recommendation. 20 minutes later they handed me a lovely replica set in exchange for £27 which I thought was very reasonable.

I've since sprayed all the metal parts with stonechip shield in the hopes of preventing further corrosion, just need to trim the flexis when they go back on.

Figured i'd go about changing the ATF while I'm at it since its starting to look a little dull, is there a specific type of fluid this gearbox uses or is it all the same? Auto boxes are a bit of a grey area for me  ???

Rex. Read This page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/autogearbox.htm) and check out the 'buttons' on the left of the page. You should find all you need there.
Didn't Pegasus use that firm for a similar job??

One of the pages there mentions that the later cars used a different type of oil to Dextron II, im guessing this applies to mine being a facelift? If so what's it called? Thanks.

It seems the spec changed from 8/96 according to This page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/a4lde.htm)
I'd search on the relevant number and find a match or compatible. :) :)

UPDATE. I've just done that and Comma has one which is an exact match. I'd ring them direct as they have a great technical team who are very knowledgeable and helpful. :)

I'm using Comma AQ202 semi-synthetic in mine, also had it in my previous Scorpio for several thousand miles.
Bought the last lot for a good price on ebay, it used to only be available by the litre, don't know if that's still the case.

That was the first one that came up when I searched, however it looks like its been discontinued. I can get the stuff that Simmo suggested from Halfords with my trade card and it works out much cheaper than anywhere else. Ordered the filter and sump gasket too so hopefully I'll be busy this weekend.

One last update for continuity:

New lines installed, they weren't perfect replicas so they had to follow a different route but they should work, also fitted a new power steering cooler and made merry with the stonechip to cover all the orange bits while everything was off.
Next stop, gearbox oil.
