Does anyone know of an 89GG18B647AB thermal fuse (working!) available anywhere? Can't find one even on Ebay.

I got this R-reg 2.9 Cossie Ghia X Estate at the end of last month to replace my old 2.3 Ultima saloon, and I am SO in love with it. Inside and out it looks like it's almost fresh from the showroom, not 22 years old, and I've slowly been working my way through checking everything is working properly. And so far absolutely everything is ... except no blower on positions 1 and 2, just full on 3. The Fault Finder page on the website here took me to the A/C Thermal Fuse page, and I've found and removed the thermal use module. While it looks pristine, as if fresh out of the box, my multimeter tells me that while the resistance coils are fine the actual fuse is blown. As I wouldn't trust myself with a soldering iron these days I'm in need of a replacement unit.

It's funny ... I unexpectedly got two large boxes of assorted spare parts included with the car, all pristine and unused and original Ford/Motorcraft parts in the original boxes (apart form the pair of front lower arms, the pair of headlights and the radiator hose, which aren't boxed!). There's everything from consumables like 4 oil filters 2 air filters, and a set of brake pads to all sorts of trim parts, an unopened bundle of Ford Dark Aubergine and Clearcoat paint, a couple of lambda sensors, brake hoses, the aforementioned lower arms and headlights and a boxed, never used water pump! I also got all the original Ford manuals, Key Code card etc and a mass of paper work, and it has genuinely only had two owners, low mileage (63,000), and the last owner was an elderly gentleman to whom this car was his pride and joy and he amassed a stock of all sorts of genuine spares in case of future need until he died. Took me an evening to catalogue all the parts .... but the one thing there isn't is a spare thermal fuse!

(My one puzzle is a set of four items in the boxes of spares that I don't know what they are. My best guess is they might be clamps to go on the roof rails to be used in pairs with some cross bar that isn't present between them. If so they are wasted on me - never had the slightest need for a roof rack.)

David, I take it that This (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/acthermalfuse.htm) is the article you mention.
It may be that one of our members on here would/could effect a repair for you or offer advice.

Ooh - didn't get notified of replies.

Well I've found one original Ford part available, unused and in box ... for about £60.00 (including delivery)!

So I ordered two thermal fuses rated at 121C, as that's what's on the original, and tried to fix it myself, cutting out the old and trying to solder in a new fuse to the cut ends of the wires to the original. I think it's about 20 years since I last tried to solder anything, and was never very proficient even then.

First attempt, got the replacement attached (very, very ugly), reached for the multimeter, and found that the fuse had blown during the fitting (I did check both were OK before starting, which they were then).

2nd attempt, with the remaining new fuse, I turned the temp of the soldering iron down to minimum, and I now have it vaguely attached and still working according to the multimeter. Looks terrible, and I doubt it's a strong connection. If it works in the car I'll be expecting one of the joins to go every time I go over a small bump. I'm afraid to apply more heat to try and improve the joins for fear of blowing the second fuse too, though. For a THERMAL fuse, you'd think they'd have devised a system that didn't need a replacement to be soldered!

I'll have to wait till tomorrow to fit it in the car and see if I get all fan settings. And keep the £60 whole unit replacement bookmarked ...

It's funny, given that I've only been out in the car in my village and the next a few times - I've already had several people come up to the car in shop car parks to admire it. Takes me back to when I sometimes borrowed my father's 1965 Jaguar S-type 3.8 in the early 80s, and I'd have people admiring it and making offers for it in car parks and from vans pulled up beside me at traffic lights or roundabouts. Who'd have thunk I'd get that effect with a Scorpio, the way the critics used to go on about their looks (although I always liked them)!
