Title: My much loved Cossie is for sale
Post by cossieguy on Apr 18th, 2007, 8:50pm
Well as many of you may know my Cossie has been giving me problems. So now is the chance for all you budding mechanics to grab a bargain! If you know these engines and are brave enough to fix head problems(Not the gasket) then here you go. Oil is slow to reach the top end of the engine which has caused damage somewhere in the head. Didn't have the funds/knowledge to delve into the head.

The car has 85,000 miles backed up with a full service history. It's Aubergine and has been polished/waxed and loved. It comes with 3 keys(Including red one) and one almost new remote in as new condition.
It is an ultima pre facelift but with brand new facelift lights on the front and facelift rear lights the grill is a facelift colour matched (Aubergine). It has just had new discs and pads on the front. It has crystal side repeaters, £300 of new components (Focal) fitted. It has rear parking sensors. It has a K&N Viper induction kit (£250 new) fitted. The IACV is only 3 months old. The interior is spotless with raven leather that i've spent hours cleaning. The alloys are 12 spokes in good condition with only minimal marks. All the electrics are fine and the A/C is ice cold. Never had electrical issues other than i've had to disable the passenger mirror dip on reverse function as it was tempermental.

I also have the following spares: Auto dipping rear view mirror, sunroof motor, all the door modules, rear lights, IACV and the original filter housing. And loads more I can't think of right now.

The car drives fine but will need attention on the engine sooner rather than later. It has done 2000 miles with this problem so should get you home no problems. The car was rolling roaded 5 months ago and produced exactly 204 Horsepower just before the noise got worse.

I'm bidding on another car at the moment so need a quick sale so reasonable offers will be considered. Car is situated just west of Birmingham (Junction 3 M54).

Hey Cossieguy,
Is this by any chance a loud ticking noise you have? Then it's probably just a stuck hydraulic lifter and you should at least try an engine flush before you give it up: warm up the engine, pour 2 pints of paraffin oil in the crankcase and go for a leasurely 15mn drive. If the noise goes away, change the oil and filter and use only 100% synthetic oil thereafter.
Try it, you have nothing to lose!
Cheers,
Mike

Alas it 's not that simple, have flushed the engine and no change. It is more than a ticking noise, it does get better once oil has reached the top end(Looking in oil filler cap, takes about 3-4 mins driving to get there) but the noise never goes away. It is gettng worse and as this is my family car I need something that I can trust in the long term. I'm sure someone with the time and knowledge will get a real bargain and keep another scorpio on the road!
Guy.

How much are you looking for?

I'm not looking to be greedy or unrealistic (Hopefully), bearing in mind you're not just buying the car but everything else ie Viper kit, speakers etc, and you could change the engine for £400 (If you do it yourself).

I reckon the first person to offer £650 can have her.
Forgot to mention MOT runs out May 14th, and tax'd till end of June.

Bloody hell Guy, so you're letting it go. I understand how you feel, needing a reliable car but you'll regret it, trust me :). If it was mine I'd be tempted to get a good mechanic to look it over, you'll be VERY lucky to find another car in that condition.

But best of luck with it, if you were nearer I'd be tempted...very tempted ;) - I saw the photos you posted and it's one helluva car.

What car you looking for? another Scorp of something newer?

Regards, Bruce.

Cheers Bruce, Had a good mechanic look at it,took the bottom end to pieces and couldn't find anything hence it looks like it's top end related, had cost £400 up to that point and with no idea of cost to take head apart, fix and reassemble couldn't justify it. Currently bidding on a couple of very low mileage escort ghia x's (Which we've had before, bought one from new in 1997) only 1.8's but still a very good car for the money. As you say the cossie is a stunna but with 2 kids and the wife not working i've got to take a practical look at it. PS one of the escorts has full leather all the extras you could tick at purchase and only 32,000 miles backed up with FSH and all the old tax discs, not
bad for a 1996 N reg.
Guy.

Yes he did, and to be honest, having Bill check the car over and perform any work is worth the peace of mind alone, knowing that you have someone wh realy knows these cars rather than most garages who think it's ,...'just another Granada mate'!

Trouble is, with the Cosworth especially, as soon as you have problems like this the value selling the car complete is depressingly low as most people who know these cars understands how much it can take to put them right.

Would seem a shame to break such a good looking car but if it really is beyond economical repair, selling the parts individually may be the best option.

I would agree.. let Bill have a look. It would be a shame to break or sell such a shiny motor (even though nobody should ever have a car THAT clean!!)

phone numbers are: 01803  663346 or  01803 556930

I must get in touch with him myself to sort out that alloy rad he was making for me...
