Post by Daniel on Nov 21st, 2013, 5:58pm
Hi all
Well this is it then. Due to stupid insurance quotes  (over 450 PER MONTH :o) I can no longer keep my scorpio. So i am thinking of selling her if the right offer comes up :( if not i will keep her fix up then sell for much more  ;D
I will NOT sell her to banger racers.
I will get some more info up and try to get pics up saturday
Just a few bits of info for now

Hi Daniel sorry to see this post, how come the insurance is so expensive? I had my first Scorpio at age 22 and only paid around £800 a year.

Would be a shame to let that low miler go...

Sorry to hear that Daniel - I guess you are a bit youger than most on this site & the 24v is quite a high grouped car, painful decision for you but £450 per month...ouch !
Is SORN & garaging not an option till you are a bit older ?

Hi mate
I am gutted but its a shame for it to just sit there, needs to be used properly for one in its life  as for the quotes i am yet to pass my test so that might be the main reason. :)  so all the quotes are for a new driver.  I need to be sensible and get a little car first, gain experience then go for a scorpio. If i dont get what i want for mine now i will store it, fix it then try to sell again or keep it if insurance is low enough.

If you have somewhere to keep it that may be your best option as prices are rock bottom right now. You are right - get a small & cheap to insure car for now, build up some NCD and you will probably be able to get it on a classic policy when you are 25. £450 a month is more than I've ever paid for a full years insurance on anything, even including the Porsche I had when I was 21...long time ago now  ;)

Bit more info for dan.

The engine has an oil pressure issue which had caused the drivers side set of cam shafts to chew into the head.

Sprockets, chains and guides are all unknown at present as is the bottom end for metal filings in the sump, bottem end bearings etc.

Runs but only has oil pressure if revs are kept above 2.5k

Don't blame you Dan, only 26k miles you say ?
Keep it if you can & mothball in a dry garage - a few years from now you will have a very nice rare classic car  ;)

Pics from your first post Dan and the Fault list Ashley

http://s1219.photobucket.com/user/cosworthdan19/slideshow/My%20Scorpio%20Cosworth

1. Engine requires a full strip down and rebuild requiring new cylinder head, cam shafts and oil pump. it may require more but We've not stripped it down to check.

2. Auto box needs attention, the selector is very stiff, it will just about go into Drive but selecting 1 or 2 is impossible. I'm 99% sure it will just be seized up ball joints on the linkage but again not investigated fully. Dont know if the kick down works as didnt want to push it to hard. It did drive all the way back from london to birmingham however

3. Paint work, it requires a respray on the bonnet, roof, boot lid and rear bumper.

DEFINATLY NOT A BANGER!!!! WAY TOO GOOD FOR THAT NEEDS TO BE SEEN IN THE FLESH.
I HAVE DECIDED NOT TO SELL IT!!!!Thanks to everyone for the interest but after comparing it to others on ebay and autotrader, and looking at the pics i have taken
(i will put them up later to show you all)
i will never be able to find one like it. I will just regret it in the future.
So the plan is keep it as it is for now, save up, get it sorted and enjoy  ;D
Thanks again all
Dan

Dan.
If I were you, having decided to keep the car,I would remove the engine in the spring possibly with guidance from the likes of Matt, then as funds allow, rebuild it carefully or obtain a proven replacement. You will be well aware that advanced body corrosion is the main decider on any monocoque car,so if yours is not too far gone it's well worth keeping because as you are a young chap you will see the time when the Scorpio is a rare and even valuable marque.
In the 1950s and 60s I had numerous Austin 7s and Ford Ys which we used to buy from scrap yards for £2 10s ( £2.50) as long as they would start we would drive away not bothering about niceties like tax and insurance, the MOT was not invented.
So imagine yourself as GOZZ in your 70s with a beautiful rare 24v Scorpio which most people will have forgotten ever existed  8)
The main stumbling block far into the future regarding the Scorpio will be obtaining parts because these cars were not hugely mass produced, nor were they everyone's  cup of tea  ::) whereas small pre war British cars have always had a big following, thus most parts are available albeit,at a price.
Stick with it Dan,be tenacious and unswerving,if negative thoughts creep into your head, look at your car and dismiss them, but do make sure you care for the Scorpio whilst it's in a dormant state.
                                                         Good luck.

Dan glad to see your keeping it dude, looks good in the pictures. Defiantly a keeper.

My auto selector would go too stiff to move every now and then, had to keep topping up the gearbox oil, turned out I needed a new jubilee clip on the gearbox oil cooler as is was slowly dripping.

Defiantly need to keep hold yours dan will be worth sorting out in the end.

Just been and picked myself up another Scorpio today, a 1999 V reg 2.3 facelift ultima with only 36k miles on the clock, it had only done 39 miles in the last 4 years 2 months since it's last mot, drove it back 50 miles took it for an and it passed.
Is now sat in my sisters garage and will be taken out every year for the mot and that's it, hopefully will be worth something one day.

thanks mate. after reading the service history, mot, and having a good look at it, i couldn't do it  :)
I did read about you buying it, i have never seen one on a v plate so thought id pop it up on here incase someone was interested, glad you got it
:)
Mine will only be used for the occasional show now and again, to keep it one of/the lowest mileage scorpio   ;D
Would you consider taking it to shows?
Would be good to see it on day
