Title: Invisible Scorpio's
Post by bazza on Sep 21st, 2004, 6:57pm
My wife was at Tesco today and must have hit the cloaking device button as a lady drew out of a parking space and hit the scorp. >:(

N/S headlight is smashed, indicator/foglight assy smashed, bumper has a large piece missing, wing is dented and the bonnet is out of alignment.

I have a witness but my ins. co. reckons car parks are iffy and insurance co.'s don't like to admit liability on them.
Just need to wait and see, but depending on where the repair is being done, it could be bye,bye walnut warrior!

dont know how true this is but this is what i heard about accidents in car parks.........
a car park is classed as a private road if it has one entrance (one opening for exit and entrance),it is classed as a public road if it has two openings (one entrance and a seperate exit),the latter being the one place insurance companys have to resolve, please dont take this as the law,it was only what i was led to believe by someone in the know......

have a wee look on ebay as one is being scrapped and bits are on sale, you never know as the ins co may help getting it repaired by a local garage of your choice. good luck and dont let her drive it again.

back to the insurance, are you fully comp, again when i had my accident the guy that came round to see the damage to my car said this......
if you are fully comp, and the insurance company decide to write the car off because it is too expensive to repair,as long as the accident was not your fault, you are well within your rights to demand the car be repaired, regardless of the expense, again so long as the accident was not your fault,i hope this makes some sense..
regards.....

Yea, fully comp and was not the wife's fault but I need to wait and see what the other insurance company advises the 'guilty' party to do.
Don't know if I want it fixed, I've spent a lot of money on it recently and still needs some minor work. MOT is up next month as well!

The car park has 2 combined entrances/exits

Just tried to phone the other party,

Details are false >:(

Police are now involved and I'll need to claim my insurance, luckily it's protected but I'll probably lose my excess cos even if they find her, she is probably not insured anyway.

Oh and the washing machine has just packed in as well

I assume you have the reg of the car involved so the Police will find it... has the car park any CCTV? ask the Store manager if he can look through it but be quick as  tapes can be cycled rather sharpish!
In my experience, reputable insurers don't discriminate about supermarket car parks... although, private land is another issue really.
There is a scheme that helps people who are involved with un-insured drivers and the Police will be able to point you in the right direction here.

Good luck with it all...

Regards

George

No CCTV but the woman was a Tesco employee so she should be easy to trace.

Car gets taken away for inspection tomorrow so I should find out next week if it's getting scrapped or not.
The bonnet also has a very minor dent and I can't see them repairing the wing

Just finally got my 16" alloys on it as well >:(

Exactly the same thing happened to me a few weeks ago - woman reversed into my car and smashed n/s headlight/indicators and pushed bumper back. Didn't get her reg no though - Doh.

As long as you have the Reg No. the Police should be able to trace her and 'suggest' she contacts you in order to sort it out as it is a criminal offence.

Leaving the scene of an accident is a criminal offence.. I found this out when I was arrested one saturday morning for this very thing. I didn't do it but the situation was that I was at the back of a line of slow moving traffic when a car came from behind over the brow of a hill and swerved violently impacting the central reservation and then crawling into the kerbside behind me.
The driver tried to say that I had made a violent manouvre and made him crash but I hadn't actually moved, I took the Police to the area and it was obvious that he had to be speeding at that point to need to take avoiding action. I didn't at the time think that it had anything to do with me.. I heard the crunch but it was behind and to my right... looking in the mirror it just looked like a driver had made a mistake and hit the central reservation.
The officer asked me why I didn't stop to offer help but as it was 50 yards behind by the time I realised what was happening... plus in that area of Newcastle you don't stop usually for any reason...if you get my drift... I didn't think it was safe or right to get involved.

They let me go after about 3 hours in the cells but it wasn't a nice experience.. all because I was last in line and my reg was the only one he could see so he thought he'd use my insurance to fix his stupid Toyota...

Hi bazza!! Very sorry 2 hear of ur troubles!!  :'(  Just a word of warnin m8, If ur undecided bout havin the car repaired, b very careful bout the insurance company takin it away for "assessment"!! My dads scorp was damaged by a white van man, last year, and the insurance company came and took it away for assessing, but, after deciding that me dad wanted it repaired, and lots of phone calls, 2 find out where it was, we eventually found it being stripped in a salvage yard, (suffice 2 say, we got it towed out immediately!!)and the insurance company hadnt even finalised what was gonna happen, with regards 2 it bein written off etc!!

Hi bazza did you tell your insurance company about your replacement wheels? are they 12 spoke scorpio spec or aftermarket ones if poss put the old ones back on before its looked at.

They are 12 spoke ultima wheels so I reckon I'll be OK.

I know the bodyshop that are assessing the car, I also know somebody that works there and I have one of their lovely Ford Ka's, should be OK

Scrappy at the top of the road from me has 4 scorps in at the moment, but why should I do the work? Front wing is a weld on job so that's even more money.

I honestly don't think I will see it again, I even removed everything from inside it so if I get the call, they can keep it

Got the Scorp back last night.

They didn't even spray the bonnet :(, but i think a trip to the scrappy is in order as one headlight and one foglight/indicator assy are brand new and kinda make the other ones pathetic looking. I need old ones to make the repair less noticeable.

Whether it has any bearing or not ?????
It used to be considered in law that land which the public have "sight and access" was not private. This was a way that the law used to nick us private hire taxi drivers for picking up unbooked fares on night club car parks... in the bad old days. So stand up to the ins co, they cave in when it appears you are fighting back and won't take no for an answer.
