Title: Problems with access to .co.uk site
Post by Snoopy on Sep 24th, 2004, 9:13pm
I'm having difficulty in accessing any of the fordscorpio.co.uk sites and forums.

All other sites working fine, cookies and temp files cleared out, along with history.

Anyone else having difficulty??

Cheers

Great NEWS really accessed through my son's connection and did all that DNS stuff that he knows and it looks like the problem is the USA end of things  not updating the DNS things correctly.. but its far to complicated for an old guy like me to understand.... thought it might be my trusty dual boot machine falling over but heh, no thaank goodness...
Back up and working now diffrent IP addres maybe, as I don't have a static one.... May be admin over there will tell me>>>>

after the crash, all i kept getting was a gateway timeout, could not log on gor love nor money, then by sheer chance somebody introduced me to to a programme that actually speeds up your dial up connection,ok not as quick as broadband, but a lot quicker than the usual 56k dial up,ever since running and installing that,i have not had a problem anywhere on the net,but if i disconnect the programme, all i go back to getting (but only on this site) is a gateway timeout  ??? ??? ???
strange

I have had and am still having a problem with access. I use Freeserve/Wanadoo and I have e-mailed them several times as Admin say this is their problem with the DNS. I have also written to them and they should receive it today(Monday). The only way I can get the site is to visit the local library which is where I am now. The latest reply told me to do a 'ping' test whatever the hell that is!!!!. Like Snoopy I'm a grumpy old man who thinks Cookies are biscuits and ping is something you do with elastic bands!!!. ??? ??? ??? All other functions, sites etc working ok.

Hey Simmo, try clearing your cache and history and cookies out from inside Internet explorer that might help. Get there via tools/options/general tab, on the menu bar

It does seem strange though as I am also with Freeserve/Wanadoo at the moment but I don't think so for much longer!

Hi Snoopy, Yep done all that and even got a neighbour who is a computer buff to do something called a ping test where you check the way the address is being read. The short answer is 'it don't work'. He confirms that it is an IPS problem. Scorpio man got me to do the cookies thing some while ago but that failed.I'm waiting for a reply from Freeserve/Wanadoo to the letter they would have got yesterday(Monday).

back to my post,i'm a freeserve/wannado customer on dial-up   :-[ :-[,after the crash,i could not access this site (and this site ONLY for some reason),then i bought/installed an on-speed device,ok costs £25.00 a year, but as far as i can see,it sorted my freeserve problem out,and has appeared to have "speeded-up" my web experience (disclaimer :,no i am not associated-affiliated with this company in ANY way ;) ;))_

Well I have done a full DNS survey from my end on the server and there do apear to be some faults at the USA end. Most probably as a result of the crash it suffered during the storms over there....

I am quite sure that the owners of the site will eventually get around to fixing it. but they are only minor ones.

But the problem does seem to stem mostly from Wanadoo/Freeserve users.

I have contacted Freeserve with regards the failures of the system but to date have not recieved a reply.... Like most things with Freeserve/Wanadoo its usually some one else's fault!

I use a Freeserve Broadband connection and find that I can usually get onto the site by disconnecting and reconnecting, there by changinging my IP address as I do not have a static IP address. I am starting to keep a reord of the ip addresss that I use so that I can add this to any further correspondance to Freeserve.

I for one as I have said many times before would have been lost without the use of this excellent site ( grovel, grovel, crawl , crawl) and get frustrated when I cannot access it..

I have posted the report on the dns server here  http://www.anyboard.net/autos/cars/scorpio/posts/289.html

We appear to all have something in common "WANADOO".
I also have broadband with them & no matter what I tried last night I could not get on this site. It's only happened since the crash, the same as you guys?
I also use Supanet so will switch to them if Wanadoo can not find the site & report back.

Snoopy and all, I had a reply from Wanadoo yesterday asking me to do a 'ping' test which I did and sent them the results. I hate to tell you this Snoopy but I'm at the library and have tried your link and it won't connect!!. Like you I get grumpy and even more so when I can't access this site. Lets keep the b....rs on the run till they sort it. Simmo

Works now! ;D

In reply to all this I have a file that runs to many, many pages now with regards problems with Wanadoo and I want to give them money but they seem unable to accept it... But like you say just keep on at them.. We WILL win in the end HA! ;D ;) :P NOT!

Hi All
Today (30/9/04) at 10:20 I could not get onto this site with Wanadoo, switched to Supanet & it is as if nothing is wrong, site appears instantly. Must be a ISP problem then I guess? Its only happened since the big crash, I will have a moan at Wanadoo.
On-speed works by downloading the pages for you then compressing them & then sending them to you.
You are using them to surf the net not Wanadoo, that's why it's faster, less to download as it's compressed.
Don't work if info is already compressed thow?

We have had lots of complaints from Wanadoo customers saying that the servers are down and the forum is not accessible. The site has been up continuously for the last week or so without interruption and there have been a steady flow of posts during that time from non-wanadoo customers.

I tested the main Wanadoo DNS servers and they do not have a copy of the Fordscorpio DNS entries (they should update them each day) so that is where the problem lies.

If you are using Wanadoo for 'pay as you go access' then consider changing ISPs - as you know www.aardvaak.net (http://www.aardvaak.net) helps pay for the FS site so you might want to try them, otherwise if you are paying a monthly fee then there are plenty of other choices.

The only alternative is to keep pestering Wanadoo tech support until they get their DNS servers refreshed.

Sorry for the inconvenience. The good news is that thanks to some very kind donations, we now have a full daily backup system working for the main site and for the forums - just in case!

Regards

Steve

You will see from my post that I knew it was with the DNS on Wanadoo site.. I posted a report on this one on the board yesterday

What you need to do is open a Command Prompt and type in

nslookup forum.fordscorpio.co.uk and then hit Enter.

You should get a response such as

Non-authoritative answer
Name:    forum.fordscorpio.co.uk
Address:  69.46.25.240

That means that your local DNS server has found the record and you should be able to access the site. Any other response indicates that the local DNS server has a problem.

You can also use other websites to do the DNS lookup for you to see if other DNS servers can see it - for example

http://www.zoneedit.com/lookup.html

If they can see it and you can't then your ISP needs to kick their DNS servers :)

I emailed Wanadoo tech supprt last night with all the details that I ahd and I must admit things do seem a little better today,, Perhaps they needed the kick as well as the DNS servers..  will have to wait and see if it stays OK... If not then I'll be on my way... ...

Thansk for the feed back
