Title: How much is this thing worth ???
Post by desperate on Jan 7th, 2005, 11:59pm
Hi

I havn't got a Parkers or Glasses Guide and was wondering how much these things are actually valued at 'officially'.

i looked high and low for my car using mainly autotrader website.

I paid £1650 for my 1995 24v ultima with 67K and hpi checked out - it has a few problems (don't get me strated) but actually behaved itself on the test drive and appears mint!

What are they worth and what would i/you expect to get for mine/yours if selling to a fellow enthusiast ?

looking forward to the replies, cheers

dan

you can check with  parkers online.... i  paid £1700 for my 1995 24v ultima. 82k with 2 owners. it had full history  but the cooler pipes  failed after a month  and there was  slight rattle on startup when cold. other than that it was perfect............

thanks chaps.  I think both those cars on ebay are a little overpriced.  Parkers suggest that i paid about top book for mine.

badboy...  what did you do about the rattling on start-up ?   Replace the RHS CCT or the whole lot (CCT's and chain) ?

Hi

Trade books will certainly give low values for these cars, and more or less they are worth what somebody is prepared to pay in the summer I sold my MKIII cosworth estate for over five times what was its value according to the glasses guide.

hi m8...

no i did the old trick of slamming my foot to the floor to fool the ecu into thinking the engine is flooded. this stops the engine from firing but lets the oil pressure build up so that it doesnt rattle on start up. however its only temporary. i did it for 6 months.... ;)

Mine is a 96 P Cosworth Ultima with leather, 54k miles, and I paid £750 for it.

It needed:
Brake hose
The usual water pipes
MOT (failed just on brake hose)
Tax

It wanted:
Wishbones
New lockset

When I got it, it wore a roof rack and has consequently got four little dents on the roof (WELL annoying), and there's a scratch on the boot.

Fettling it has cost me £850! Eek. Total cost of getting it going really well, £1600.

It's tough finding bargains really. The main problem with mine was the water pipes.. it didn't leak on the test run, so I didn't notice it. Had they been ok, I would have considered it a bargain. As it happens, it was just average really!

At the end of the day, you're getting a seven-ten year old 30k car for less than 2k as long as you're not wanting a low mileage 100%er. I can't complain!

Hi dave,

Did you buy that from a chap in manchester way at the end of October ???    Off the autotrader site ???

If so, i was supposed to be buying that and the garage owner said he'd 'save it untill the saturday' but half way on the saturday there i called him as agreed to make sure he was about, and he'd sold it the night before not long after talking to me on the phone.  the lying weasel.

If not.. forget that  LOL

Hey Desperate, possibly, the guy got it in on Thursday, advertised it on Friday and I took it home on Saturday, right at the end of October.. it was Wigan. He said he'd had other calls so you never know. In the advert did it say it was black, and had a towbar?  In real life it's green and didn't have a towbar!

I have just bought a diesel ultima estate, and had been looking for approx 7months. The prices for these are just astronomical, a garage in london had one (96P) for £4995 and offered me a delightful £500 for my 1999T Mondeo in p/ex! He didn't appreciate my offer and my suggestions about his pricing structure.  ???

Others I looked at all ultimas unless stated:
1998R Ghia with leather 150k and oil leak £2000 no offers, so no deal! :P
1995M 140k £2000, sold before I could see.
One went on ebay 1995 M 66k £2050 I was outbid last second.... :(
Plus many more between £2000 and £5000!

And the best of the lot...1996P including leather 160k in Dewsbury, Leeds area - I live in brum, spoke to the dealer asked a mountain of questions to check it would be good enough and took a saturday running up there to view, it was a shed, oil all along the bottom, loads of smoke on start up (head gasket) also turbo gone cracked bumper, some elctric failures and had been used by a builder I expect to carry bricks. They had shined it so much you could smear the polish everywhere and the cheeky git wanted £2200! Outrageous.....I was not impressed. >:( :o

Eventually picked up my 1995M from a local dealer for £1150, cracked front bumper and scratch on bonnet are the only body faults, spotless underneath, 2 owners last for 6 years, no smoke, runs well, immaculate interior (cloth though) but has 155k on clock. The only fault that i have now fixed was a faulty temperature sender stopping temp gauge working. :)

Many a time I could have spent less than a grand if I wanted a petrol version, but stuck out for the diesel and got there eventually.

At the end of the day parkers/ glasses tends not to be that accurate on cars in demand or rare as this can mean many people after the same car...and prices rise accordingly.

Nice write up Paul thanks mate.  Surprised to see the cossy 1995 M's going for above £2K as well.

You obviously did yer home work on locating a diesel scorpio.  but after the Vauxhall Vectra 2DTi (swear words - bought in 2000 for £8K, spent £1.5K on it, scrapped last year for £250 quid) farce i had last year - gear box, head gasket, ECU, electrics, suspension, etc etc i'll never, ever touch a diesel again - apart from my van that is.

Cheers

dan

they are avin a laugh, it goes to show that the old myth about dealers being sharks is still true in many cases asking way over book price for a tarted up shed, arther daley would have been proud of them lol.
i personally would buy privately you can get a better/newer car for less money the only downside is no warranty or comeback if there is anything wrong with it.

Not yet Barry...

I'm waiting for my OBD2 lead before i go trusting the mechannic that obviously wants £1K for a new gearbox.

can't understand what the knocking is though.. (not there when turning left, gotta be a bush somewhere) as the MOT man gave it a clean bill of health... i told him about the knock and he shrugged his shoulders saying the bushes etc were OK.

So...  gearbox worries (still 4-6 secs to D, slow kick down sometimes none) , rear hissing from diff (speed related), knocking, though luckily the CCT's seem to be behaving themselves of late.

Anyone had an excessively still throttle ??  TPS need adjustment ??  Actual TB linkage is fine so i'm gonna lubricate the cable and see what happens.

the electric seats seem to take ages to get warm as well.  then go warm/cold/warm/cold all the way through the journey...

Good innit :-)

The anti-roll bar link rods make loads of noise for very little play, highly suspect IMO. Good call for the OBD thouth, if you can't get it before, Herts meet 13th Feb :P
