Title: Re: gear box fluid Post by nuttyscorp on Oct 25th, 2005, 10:51pm if the box is running ok, (is it auto?) changing gear smoothly when it should, then its unlikely you've damaged it. as you suspect you've got a leak from the sump gasket, i'd reccommend that you change it. while youve got the sump of, change the panel filter too, as when this is blocked, it can be the cause of many problems. when the sump is back on, add oil to correct level (correct oil level is when when it is at operating temperature, with the engine running) if it is auto, move gear lever back and forth several times to help initial circulation.(foot on brake of course!) i done mine(2.3 auto) recently, should only take around 2-3hrs, cost of oil, filter, and sump gasket is approx £60 in total. hope that helps Russ p.s you will get covered in gearbox oil! as there is no sump plug! |

Title: Re: gear box fluid Post by Eric_R on Oct 30th, 2005, 5:27pm Gaza, You should find this leak without delay. The gearbox fluid is a sealed system and should not need topping up in normal service. Check the oil cooler pipes beneath the nearside of the radiator - these corrode over time and the fluid can leak onto the engine under-panel so you won't see any drips. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/coolerpipes.htm Check the same pipes back to the autobox and make sure none are damaged. Also have a look at the general advice on http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/autogearbox.htm and work through that. If the gearbox is a proper pink colour, not black or brown and no black gritty bits then the box is in generally good condition, a fluid and filter change mentioned by Russ is a good idea. If the fluid is burnt though, changing the fluid will not achieve much. |
