Title: People actually buy BMW 3 Serieses?
Post by Penguin on Jan 5th, 2006, 12:46am
Well my scorp is now fine.  Sent it to the garage on Monday because of aforementionned lack of cabin heat.  Thanks to those who replied - you were right it was a blown out thermostat.  All fixed now.  While it was there I got my tame mechanic to check the whole car over and was expecting the worst - I mean you never can tell with so-called fully serviced cars from garages and besides the heater packed in within a week so it didn't inspire confidence...

...but apart from a non-functioning rear screen washer (simply blocked and easily fixed) he could not find a single thing wrong - not even so much as a non-specification spark plug.

Anyway at about 8 this evening I went out to my local garage on foot (as 'tis also my corner shop) for some milk and on the way I saw parked up a BMW 3 Series with a sign saying it was for sale.

It was a 1998 S plate 318i manual and the sign claimed 110,000 miles.  The price was £4500.

£4,500!!    :o :o

WHO ON EARTH WOULD PaY FOUR AND A HALF B****DY GRAND FOR AN UNCOMFORTABLE CAR THAT LOOKS LIKE AN UPTURNED WHEELBARROW, HAS LESS POWER THAN A LAWNMOWER AND DOESN'T EVEN GIVE YOU ALLOY WHEELS, LET ALONE AIR-CON, ELECTRIC WINDOWS OR ANYTHING ACTUALLY USEFUL?

}{

I thought the seller must be deluded, after all I've just bought a Cosworth Scorpio Estateof the same age but with 5,000 miles less on the clock for TWO GRAND cheaper than that.

But I checked it against Parkers and actually that price would be considered a bargain. What a world we live in.

Cheers

Paul

That car's gone now - if it was sold then it went within a week of my first reporting it so it must have been worth 4.5 grand to someone.

Had another one - this time a P plate 316 - on my tale this afternoon while comming down the M40.  I was in the outside lane doing low 90's just north of the steep bit up the Chiltern's and - flash - flash - I notice said vehicle litterally a foot from me the driver (a 20-something bloke in a Man U shirt) evidently enraged that I should be in his way.

So I pulled over and he shot past, at which point I noticed the 316 badge, and I laughed quietly to myself because - sure enough - two miles further on when the road goes up the chilterns on a steep in incline, Mr Beemer had slowed all the way down to 70 trying to get up the hill (and judging by the noise of his engine whcih I could here inside my Scorpio he was really flogging it for that speed.   He WOULD NOT get out of the outside lane though, so eventually myself and the Audi A6 behind me had to take him on the inside.

Once we got onto the flat again he shot back past both of us above 100 and blaring his horn.

All very sad.

Cheers

nice one penguin,

that's the trouble these days, the road is so full of w...kers,it does get to me sometimes, especially when they're still using their mobiles!
perhaps some people don't realise it is now illegal,
as for bmws, very common to see these days which can't be said of the scorpio, which is fast becoming a unique car on the road.
a rare sight to see one but great when i do!

cheers,
bob

LOL @ highlander.

Paul it is amusing to see that sort of driving, some drivers. I'm impressed you resisted the temptation to keep slightly ahead of him after pulling over and then disappearing from view as you accelerated up the incline and he fell back.

Inferiority complexes do many things to many people and buying a 318i bmw is one way of getting an overdose of inferiority, shame really. I feel sorry for them. :P

reminds me of the email, i think it was on here, in off topic, of the bmw driver and the bmw lane?  maybe someone can post the link?

my wee bro drives a 2001 320ci with all the toys... very low mileage, and its a 2.3 6 cyl

on a run up from newcastle just before xmas, it seemed a lot slower and noisier than my 2.3 scorp, and he paid oh so much more for his....

not that i would slag it off to his face, i just gave him a shot of my car, and he found out for himself!!

Beemers are common as muck aren't they, but still not to everyones taste. Well, not ours anyway.

A good mate of mine has one and it is quite a nice motor but not as good as the Scorpio (IMO)

I have some photos here of the 2 of them together. If anyone is interested, the Beemer is going up for sale very shortly. It's a 'P' plate 535si

SEEING BOTH TOGETHER JUST SHOWS OF SCORPIOS TRUE CLASS.

Well I actually prefer the look of the BMW 5/7 series to the Scorpio (which I used to think was hideous, but it has sort of grown on me since).  Having said that, I know which is the best value to buy - clue: my ego doesn't need a German badge to prop it up.  ;D

Sorry to let the side down but I once, as a youngster I may add owned an M3
Okay it was fast but it drank more than my current 24v, was uncomfortable had next to no toys and was stupidly expensive for parts and servicing.
Most of the time now I will let this type of rsole pass with a smug look on my face knowing that my right foot could easily dent his/her ego big time.
But on the odd ocasion when I'm on my own (ie no family in the car) I will tan their hide with a flick of a little switch and knock the scorp into silly mode.
But I never never go above the legal spead limit your honour ;) ;) ;)

My old Rover 820Si was great for doing that.  Didn't look fast or sporty; it was too big and too old (K-reg) so most boy-racers didn't bother to race from the lights.  Those that did usually gave up after a few tries!

Of course, I'm older and wiser now (well, older at least) and have put such silliness behind me.  Sort of.   ;D
