Title: Thats SORN it
Post by Geoff_W on Jun 1st, 2006, 9:42pm
Weellll you may have noticed that I have been a little quiet this last few weeks (or maybe not  :) )

Anyhow the venerable beast had its MOT two weeks ago and did'nt quite make it.

A tyre, exhaust, exhaust manifold, couple of brake pipes, rack and a drop link. Actually things that are doable but of course the emissions cannot be checked until the exhaust stuff gets sorted.

Any how then the tester pointed out the real problem
:-X

This comes under the heading of a word of warning drivers floor pan quite badly corroded, large sections including seat mounting points and seat belt mountings to be replaced. (Interior out major surgery with a torch)

Things were looking pretty kosher last time I was underneath in November but we have had a fair bit of salt and grit since then.

Any way those of you that were mentally pricing the job up will probably have realised that before the welding there is likely to be the best part of a grand in bits and the problem with corrosion is that you really don't know till you cut it back. :-/  funnily enough rear wheel arches are not bad really.

So its SORNED and off the road whilst I decide what to do with it. (And the good bits) Chugging about in a Honda Civic at the moment

Hopefully I will have picked up another Scorp by Harewood, but the guess the mileage is a goner.

Not giving up without a fight though.

Maybe I'm spoiled with having access to a whole shipyard including tools and workers, but that job doesn't sound THAT bad. (Actually had the drivers seat welded today. Right hand side of the lifting arm had come loose.) Should be down to cutting the bad pieces out with a blow torch and welding in new steel.

Hope you get it fixed. I would have lended you a hand if it weren't for the distance   :)

Thanks for the thought, I guess I am a bit uneasy about corrosion generally and the last bit of hot metal I did was about 30 years ago and even that was only brazing.

If you can find someone who can handle a blow torch and a TIG/MIG welder, it shouldn't be too hard to fix. (Ofcourse depending on how far the rust has spread. Could be a bit more difficult if it has spread around the gear box and other hard-to-access areas, but still not impossible. "There is no such thing as impossible. It just takes some more time"  ;))

However, I would add to that " and cash" on the basis that in my experience once you start digging at rusty areas there is normaly a lot of hidden rot.
sorry for the negative thoughts geoff :-/
My scorp is also off the road due to emissions and a break pipe hope to get it sorted after my hols.

Sorry to hear that Geoff, we have used a local chap for welding whenever we needed it, charges us very little compared to a "normal" garage. Have you got anyone similar nearby?

Once had a MK4 2.0 GL Cortina (first car) that I could see the cats eyes flicking past under the pedals. Welding it was more than the car was worth. The engine & gearbox were as good as you could get, but I didn't have the space to break it.
It broke my heart when it was finally towed away to car heaven :'(

Right folks,

I am back in the fold, I now have two Scorps having picked up a 96 2.9 12valve Ultima saloon in Tourmallard this afternoon, cruised back from Coventry up to Yorkshire and delighted with it (little bit tappety but pulls like a train  ;D big benefit is that it came with 12 months MOT and some tax so I am a happy bunny...for the moment.

However no red key and an aftermarket Toad alarm so I need to search back over the options for sorting that...

Dave now I have a 12valve permission to be Grumpy?

Geoff

Give it a couple of oil changes fairly quickly and use good oil the tappets are hydraulic and should quieten down with clean oil.

Well done .

First oil change today and its just fine, aircon compressor is a little bit noisy and probably will have to swap it out sometime, but the aircon is Ice Cold.

Compressors are a bit noisey if it is working OK leave it alone. Just get the system serviced every couple of years..  and the polen filters changed. I do mine every 12 months.

Thanks Dave,

As I don't think it has had a service for a while and it still has the 750g fill label I think that I will get that done sooner rather than later.

I realise that this does not have the dash of the Cossie but I really think I am going to enjoy this.

I ran mine with the 750 g A/C until 2004 and never ( touching wood , fingers and all appendages crossed) had any problems ,and then had it done at Derby at the meet there. well worth investing in a new dzzy cap and rotor arm and leads sometime but otherwise a good plodder seem to go for ever especially on the M/way.

Thanks Dave, are there any other bits that are getting rare for the 12v that I need to keep an eye out for?

I would imagine parts are easier to find for the 12v engine than any of the others in the lineup.

Well the oil filter apparently has a common reference with a transit so was nice and reasonable, now I need an lpg kit ;D

The 12v scorpio  has a lot of grannie bits engine wise never had any problems getting bits and bobs . The hoses can be expensive and are a FMD part only no onw seems to make them these days  but everything else failry standard.

Well my 2.0 Litre passed its MOT test yesterday and I now have it back on the drive.

Only possible with help from:

Stuart - 2.3 litre exhaust and ABS sensor - Thank you Stuart  ;) (2.3 back box and centre section fits 2.0)
Mark - Exhaust Manifold - Thanks Mark
A pattern Catalytic convertor courtesy of a steer from Bertie

Some new bits and a great piece of welding by MotorCity at Ferrybridge.

And of course MasterCard - priceless

Car running sweetly. Now to tidy it up and get some polish on it before winter gets to nasty..

Only glitch is I seem to have mislaid the radio code .... but I know that should not be to much of a problem.

Future projects include some paint and I want to look at the logistics of swapping the MT75 for an auto box

The 12 valve is doing nicely and I still love the burble..

And Christmas is a coming  8)

So you'll have 3 Scorps? Be rivalling Stuart next  ;D

Well not so sure about matching Stuart, he also has a fleet of donors  8)

Anyhoo the 16 valve needs some tlc before I start any new projects, so an estate is a 2007/8 thing
