Title: Alas, my poor Scorpio, I knew her so well.....
Post by Baw_Flinger on Jun 26th, 2006, 12:15pm
Well, she's going I'm afraid. After 7 months and £1K of pure baw ache I just cant deal with it anymore. She's back on the road again but my current job situation just wont put up with anything else to go wrong, so I have went out and got a Toyota Avensis. God, that is a boring car but hey, it might stay on the road for a couple of years ;D ;)
I would just like to say a huge, huge thanks to everyone on this site for all the help (+ parts :)) that kept going for as long as I did. I really loved the stupid thing otherwise I would not have botherd after the first major problem.

But hey, if the job situation gets back to what I am used to, I'll be back looking for another (now I know what to look for ;)) Next time though, it'll be a V6!!

Cheers all!!!!! :D :) :)

Ah, I'm sorry to hear that you have to get rid of the old beast, especially as it's such a pretty colour ::)

I hope you will stick around, and not start going to Avensis meets instead :P

The only thing I'll be showing off about is my monthly fuel bill, average of 38mpg and 45 on a run :D I wonder what type of bulbs it takes in the dash and switches.........  }{

I did the same as you Baw. Two years ago I bought a new shape Mondeo & sold my beloved 2.0 Ghia at the car auction (had 180K & was costing money).
Six months down the line I was starting to get twitchy & after eighteen months I decided the Mondeo wasn't half the car the Scorp was so I flogged it & bought my present 2.3 Ultiima (what a car!!) 8)
Do you think you'll last longer than 18 months before you give in to the urge?  ;) ;D

It hasent went yet and already the urge is there another one }{ I think though that the next one I get will be a weekend car with a bit of 12v or 24v poke. Running my scorp was more like an expensive hobby so I dont think I would run another as my everyday car, but then again, if it was sitting in drive, would I be able to resist the urge?? ;D

Thoses Avensis's are very economical - when new I got 49.4mpg out of the 1.8 petrol (driving really steadily on the motorway) - nowadays with about 170K on them they're returning roughly 38.2mpg but can still touch 40mpg if I try.

I did have a 2.0TD Avensis as a courtesy car and that did 38mpg towing a 15' caravan down to Somerset, and a whopping 63.5mpg solo going up to Aberdeen!

Meenee Cab?! Meenee Cab?! ;D ;D Now theres an idea!!!!
Nice. Well today I had a flashback to a few years ago when I had an R416 (1.6l) when I would manage to get 320 mile out of a £35 fill up (at 79p - 84p per ltr back then) on a motorway run. Today was the first chance I have had to take the silver kitten on a test run and did 92 miles, 5 in towns and the rest on motorway. Average speed was 80-85 mph constant as possible but did not try to hold back on the horses in town either! And the price when I got back to the pump for a test top-up..... £9.20 ;D ;D ;D Now, it holds 60l That means I (in theory) should get up to 600 miles from a tank with carfull driving on a run, without being an 'econ light chaser'. Ofcoarse, I dont have comfort, leather, legroom, hearing.......... but at least I may be able to eat this week, as I dont have the usual fuel bill :D Seeing as it only has 76K on the clock, should be OK on thos figs for a couple of years as well...

Hmmm, well we get about 450 miles out of a £52 fill-up on our 1.8 Avensis's - though I can stretch it to 500 miles if I go on the fuel computer rather than the gauge.  Mind you, ours are on about 150-180K miles each (mostly motorway though) and average a little over 38mpg each.

I have just sat down and worked it out properly. That trip was an average of 48mpg based on 92 miles traveled using approx 8.65l of fuel. My manual says that the tank holds 60l, so if you use the above numbers it should return 633.6 miles. Of coarse, this will be pure boolax in reality and dont expect to hee haw like that ;D ::)
BTW mate, how have you been finding the Avensis? Only now am I starting to unearth horror stories about gear boxes failing at 50K-60K :o

Umm, we did have one gearbox go in the first year (left our poor techy girl stranded on the M25), and the synchros are starting to go on some of the gears on a few of the them - but these have done double your mileage and they are pool cars so only get washed a few times a year and vacummed even less!  Most of them have had new engines though as they do tend to use oil (Toyota say this is normal) and some of the sales people didn't have a clue what the red 'aladdin's lamp' on the dash meant!  :o  Several miles with that on and the engines sounded like a bag of spanners thrown into a cement mixer...

TBH we've not been impressed with the material quality of them, interior trim seems particularly weak (especially the sunvisors) and all of the engines use oil.  However these cars are thrashed to within an inch of their lives by people with no common sense or mechanical sympathy and tight deadlines to meet, so we're not really fair as a benchmark.

Fair Doo's. I take it they have VVTI engines? Aparently a few drivers are going back to the older lean burn 98-99 (same as mine) because of the oil use. Anyway, thanks for the info :)
