Title: New person here!
Post by Filterlab on Nov 21st, 2006, 4:21pm
Hello all!

Just joined today, and got a very nice welcome email too.  ;D

Haven't had a Ford for a few years - last one being 6 years ago when I had a Sierra 2.9 V6 4x4. It wasn't the XR though, it was a plain old GLSi which made it even more surprising to the unsuspecting lad racer.   :) I still maintain that it was the best car I've ever owned despite having a BMW 7 series amongst other more exotic beasts.

Anyway, I'm replacing my Saab 9000 in about three weeks and I thought I'd grab a late plate Ultima Cosworth. Looking for a low mileage with over the top service history in spanking condition. It's really just to grab the last powerful saloon that used the Cologne V6 as the engine has never failed to amaze me.

I've scanned through the massive quantity of FAQs and Buyer's Guides but I will print it off later and read it thoroughly.

In the meantime, I'll have a buzz through some of the posts on here and get to know a bit more about these cars.

There's a couple of very nice Ultimas on Autotrader at the mo, if you could give me some feedback that would be gratefully appreciated.

Cheers, Rob.
AUTOTRADER (http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/WWW/cars_search.asp?searchform=&modelexact=1&lid=search_used_cars_full&photo=1&state=none&sort=5&make=FORD&min_pr=75&source=0&model=SCORPIO&max_pr=&agerange=&mileage=&miles=1500&trim=&keywords=&postcode=kt15+3na)

Third and Fourth down are my current considerations.

Welcome. The one listed under 'Brooklands' is shown as Glastonbury and we have a very knowledgeable member who lives nearby. Neither are listed as having full service history and the first one you mention does not specify the engine size. There is vast difference between engines. The Brooklands one is a Cosworth I assume. Also if you look under 'Meetings' you will see there is a meet in Kent on Sunday,at Badgers Mount, and it may be worth a trip to see the various cars/members there.

Oddly I missed the engine size on the 62,000 Ultima, which is not me at all!

The one at Brooklands is a Cosworth and all their cars have a full service history (according to the dealer profile).

I was tending more to the one at Brooklands anyway as it seems like a very clean car and dealer facilities are always a bonus especially if something goes wrong.

I spotted the meet at Kent at the weekend so I may just pop along and a chat.

Cheers!  ;D

Hi Craig.

Many thanks for your kind offer. If you have the time on your hands that would be most generous of you.

As I said I haven't had a Ford for quite a few years so I'm not that sharp on what to look out for (other than the buyer's guide on here). However, I do have knowledge of the Cologne V6 (albeit not the 24v) so that much I'm competent with.

I'm not a million miles away (5 miles from J10, M25) so if I could meet up with you and head down to the garage together, maybe you could explain what you're looking at/for. Obviously beer tokens for time would be the gentlemanly thing.

Cheers,

Rob.

Grand, thanks for that Craig.

There's nothing specific that I need to know, just that it has a good solid service history (preferably with receipts) and that it is in sound condition.

The colour I like, the interior I like, the spec I like (if it is a genuine Ultima and not a rebadged Ghia X) so if it's in really good condition then I'm happy.

The price I felt was a little higher than the norm, but if the above backs it up then fair enough. It's more the condition rather than the price that concerns me.

I've PM'd my contact details, give me a buzz anytime and thanks again.

:)

Rob, I don't mean to be rude but £3450 is an awful lot for these motors at the moment (Even at trade prices). Have a look at this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=010&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=200049492441&rd=1&rd=1)
It seems a good car(Albeit higher mileage and without leather,BUT new gearbox and reconned engine) with loadsa receipts probably for a fraction of the price the trade would sell at. Got my Cossie off Ebay quite pricey at £1380 with 78,000 and FSH. Good car with only the small usual gripes these cars get. Would recommend avoiding unreasonably high dealer prices.
Guy.

Hi Cossie Guy!

Yeah, it is a high price but it depends on how good the car is I suppose.

There seems to be a massive range of prices for a specific model and year so I'm concentrating on the model I like and how thoroughly the car has been looked after.

That one on ebay looks good although I'm not convinced with the blue lights or the modifications. Also it has a comparatively high mileage and there's no pictures of the interior at all.

I'm really after a completely original and mint Scorpio, one that I'll probably hang on to for three years or so, although I do take your point on the price.

However, I'll know more when Craig has had a gawps.  ;D

Sounds like you were very lucky to find yours though! Any pictures?

Yep here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Advice;action=display;num=1160981341) (1/2 way down page) though this larger one is my favourite:

Have changed a few things from original pre facelift ie front headlights/grill and rear lights also side repeaters.

And have added Pipercross Viper kit as well:

WOW!

Looks absolutely stunning mate!

I do like to see a well polished car, the Aubergine colour is a great colour for the Scorpio.

Looks very good with the facelift front too. Rear looks very nice too although I personally prefer the pre-facelift rear lights, but then I do like the yank look so to speak.

Talking again of the price. I checked on Parker's last night and the Independant dealer price for an average mileage 'P' plate is £1,160! As you said that's a heck of a long way from £3,450 so pending what Craig finds I may be looking for a slightly more realistically priced one.

Cheers!

Hi Rob,

and welcome to the site.

[]

I bought mine at the beginning of the year, Ash Black one owner FSH, 87k miles, 1996 Cosworth Ultima Estate, fully loaded (even got parking sensors) paid £1350.

I understand you want one to last you a while, but what I found was mine was fine for a couple of months, then in quick succession...... Water Pump, Aux Fusebox, Power Steering Hose, VSS, Heater Matrix, Rollbar Links and Bushes, Engine wiring loom, and Stereo Head unit.

Since carrying out all that work, at a cost of approx a grand in bits and pieces, the car is now in mint condition and I know it back to front and it has absolutely no faults whatsoever.  ;D

My point is IMHO it sounds like an awful lot of money for this particular car and you may be better to buy one for around a grand to 1500 quid and spend a grand getting it up to top notch condition. I normally find whatever car people buy they will spend money on it to get it up to their personal "SCRATCH".

Regards

the prices of these cars are always all over the place , if it have loads of service history and loads of work all ready done which you know wont need replacing ie bearings bushes etc and if it is mint and genuine its prob worth 3000, as buying a cheaper one at say 1500 and having to do loads of little jobs your self and parts it would soon cost in that the price range they are asking , tyres are quite expensive for the 24v and so are the exust  systems with 2 cats and also the radiators well most scorpio parts are lol, but if these alone are quite new you then know it will last the 3 years you want them to, so if it is genuine it could work out cheaper in the long run and be a trustworty car to you and family, plus the 24v is getting more rear now and to find a 100% 1 is pretty hard to find , but it do look genuine in the pics .

i can also see guys point too but guy if you total up every thing together of what you have spent on  your car you would prob be shocked lol (like us lol) and it prob works out the same if not even more than the one for sale, but yes i do see what you are saying as well

thats where the desision is always a hard one ......... :-/

the millage of 82000 is a slight worry at that price as it from then on things start wearing  out on a scorp unless they have already been replaced ....

couldn't agree more bootifull.....
butlike you say, there are always differing views.i think you have summed it up nicely,OK you can buy a "bargain" for 1300.00,but exactly as you state, add up the work you have had done? (the price will shock you i'll bet),bargains are always out there, especially privately, you have security with a dealer,it's down to personal preference.....
but i will end on saying this,it's christmas,no one buy's a car this time of year, especially from a dealer, haggle to the end,and there is always a deal there to be done...

You said it mate! I always change my car in either December, January or February - the traditionally slow months for car sales.

Thanks for all the input guys!  :)
