Title: Not having a good day.

40 miles an hour, patch of diesel, two crash barriers.

Suppose when all's said and done, it's only a car and I'm in one piece.

I've accepted that it's written off, the rear sustained a lot of damage in the first impact.

Thanks for the sympathy and good wishes, I'm off to the autotrader website and ebay now, I think it's got to be another Scorp'.

I'll keep you posted

Best wishes

BUT Any landing you walk away from is a good one..............
AND Despite impacts passenger compartment looks v. intact...........Scorpio design saves you injury........
ALSO If insurance pays out OK with falling values perhaps you can buy an even better Scorp......... :)
Very Good Luck to You.......try and keep your chin up ;)

Thanks for best wishes everyone.

I've done the math and with loss of no claims, £250.00 excess and future insurance costs, It doesn't make a claim worthwhile. Guess I'll just have to take the financial hit and take advantage of falling values ;).

So here's the good news, got a couple of Scorp's to look at today, I'll keep you informed.

I'm as stiff as a board today, but still congratulating myself on emerging with clean underwear :o

Best wishes

Geoff,
Gald you came out of that in one piece.
Did the traction control kick in?
Hope you manage to find a good Scorp. The one above on Ebay looks in decent condition and it appears to have the reversing sensors fitted as well.

Title: Re: Not having a good day.
Post by Ultima2300 on Feb 6th, 2007, 4:21pm
Never noticed the traction control, too busy watching the world revolve around me ;D

I'm watching the above Scorp, thanks for the heads up Mr_F!

Saw 2 today:

1) a filthy and shabby '96 2.3 Ghia with 72K on the clock, which smelt like someone had kept their cat in it.

2) a white 2.0 8v Executive, manual, 61K, FSH spots of rust on the rear wheel arches, made worse by the white paint.  Gotta confess the poverty spec' was the real reason for not doing a deal.

I have to say the Ultima has spoiled me.

Geoff

Post by TiberiuS on Feb 6th, 2007, 6:08pm
Geoff, get another Ultima, either another 2.3 or a 24v. One thing I miss about the 2.3 now was the smoothness, probably the smoothest/quietest engine I've driven. It might not be a F1 car but has a good upper power band if you floor it, mine really came alive above 4000rpm.

Why am I saying this? You know it already ::)

Cossie is nice but I have my motorway rocket now, I'd probably get another 2.3, compromise a bit of performance for the 2.3's smoothness and an attempt to get high 20's mpg (which I'm sure must be possible :)).

Hell of a shame about the car but it does say something about how safe the scorpio is, the crumple zones might have gone but the centre cage looks square still.

Regards, Bruce :)

Post by Ultima2300 on Feb 6th, 2007, 6:16pm
Cheers Bruce,

If you still had yours I'd be on the next train.

Credit where it's due, when the car came to a stop, the still doors opened and I emerged unscathed.  (My other half can't figure out why the airbags didn't go off, and truth to tell neither can I. ???)

Best wishes

Geoff

Geoff,
I am quite sure that most vehicle manufactures do recommend that air bags over 10 years old are checked or even changed as a matter of routine.
Maybe they were faulty but often it is too late before the driver finds this out.
I do recall a case some time ago, where the airbags DID deploy after a fatal accident and the coroner found interaction with the airbag itself, was the cause of death.
Maybe a good thing in a way they didnt deploy.

Very sorry to see your motor looking in that state. Glad you are OK and I agree with above comments about getting the Ultima model. You can always get a loan to get what you want :)

Title: Re: Not having a good day.
Post by TiberiuS on Feb 6th, 2007, 8:19pm
I've often wondered about this myself, it's often said that Ford reckoned the life of the propellant was 10 years and after this the bags should be renewed but is there any definite way of testing them without actually firing them?

I know the airbag lamp comes on if there's a fault in the circuit but what if the unit itself goes faulty with age? No reason they shouldn't have fired but mabye if the car was spinning around they didn't trigger??

Geoff, get the best car you can, at the prices now it's not worth getting a base spec model. Some features in the Ultima are really nice to have, like the puddle lights and the dual climate control...and the vairable intermittent wipers and the...ahhh

Regards, Bruce :)

Is anyone on here "Bidder-1" or am I bidding against the wall?  Seems a little suspect, I ran to £1,100 but I think I'm being given the run round.

Geoff

BTW if anyone hears of a decent car for sale in the next couple of days, please pm me.

Title: Re: Not having a good day.
Post by scorpio_man on Feb 7th, 2007, 9:16am
hi there

ebay have changed the rules so you can't see how's bidding. it's to stop people looking at what you've bought (ie lots of scorpio bits) and upping the price knowing you really want it.

example. you've bought 1 h/light. you need the other one. i now know this, so i make sure i get top dollar for the one i'm selling.

it's a bit like buying all the scorpio's bit up then selling them a crazy prices. reminds me of someone! ;)

Thanks for that hth.

I should read my emails. ;)

Times getting short and the Scorp' was my daily driver.  I'm off to do a deal on the white 2 litre I saw yesterday.

Please forgive me, but hey it's still a Scorpio and it will do while I search for the right one.

Couldn't see anything that particularly tickled me.  Not sure I'm quite ready for a 2.9 8)

Anyhow, did a deal on the white one, rust looked less of a problem on second inspection.

Should pick it up with 12 months ticket on Friday.  Will post pictures too.

Thanks for everyones support and suggestions, it means a lot to me.

Can you get your old one back for spares? ;)

While still slightly shocked, I'm afraid I instucted the garage to dispose of it. ???

I suspect to quote the mechanic I use "It's been cubed".

Sorry, I should have thought about the seats, etc which would have been useful, either upgrading the above or to someone else.

I would doubt it's been crushed yet............
Who removed it from the scene? Did you have to pay to have it removed or did they take the car as payment?
If your not making a claim on your insurance......it still belongs to you......
Also you could claim back any outstanding tax if you get the disc.........
? Have you anywhere to put it?
Suggest you pursue asap (if you have the heart to :()
BTW Glad you got fixed up so quickly and I hope you enjoy your new car. ;)

Looking at the front of the car I'd say that the airbags didn't deploy because of the side swipe nature of the impact and not being head on, I notice the front bumper is still as should be in the centre, which is normally the location for the sensor. If I was being spun around I personally wouldn't want the bags going off. (including the other half after totalling the motor...moan moan moan!! ;))

Well done on getting another scorpio, really not sure if I like white myself.

I got the tax disc ;)

Unfortunately street parking is it for where I live, so no place to store the car, or any spares truth to be told.

The car was moved courtesy of my Green Flag cover.  I had it removed to my local mechanics workshop.  He has a unit, but not a compound, so the wreck needed to be moved on asap.

Sorry guys, but I've been a company car driver for the last 20 years or more, working on a replace rather than fix it basis.  I have to say in the first few hours after the accident I went in auto-pilot.

I'm hoping there won't be a next time, but I do make a solemn promise to factor in retrieving the spares if I find myself in a situation where I'm disposing of a Scorp' beyond economic repair.

However, onwards and upwards.

White wouldn't be my first choice either, but I wanted another Scorpio and this is the best I could find at short notice.  However, I do see it as a stop-gap arrangement. However it does have an interesting history, complete with the original delivery note to GK Holdings, when it spent the first nine months of its life as a company car for Makita Tools.

Expect to see this for sale when I find another Ultima that comes close to the level of the last one.

Once again thanks for support and good wishes.

Geoff

Blimey Mr Floppy, steady on! :o ::)

White, eh? When we had the Capri, the worst thing with white was keeping it white, stopping it oxidising and turning ivory. And then you get to black, well don't even go there. My car's not even metallic but polish it up and by the time you've driven around the block it looks like you've had it buried in the garden for the last century...

Hmmm...white Scorpio...

First you get the bog standard white Ultima saloon:

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l89/TiberiuS1250/Scorpiowhite3.jpg

And then you can fit the front bodykit, smoked glass and 20 inch chromed rims:

Hey Bruce what graphics package did you use?  Those are some way cool pictures 8)

Picked up the car this morning.  Can't think why but after a week of not driving I was very nervous, particularly heading into bends, etc ???

So I put 90 or so miles on the clock visiting my elderly mother in Burnley.

Car turns out to be smooth and quiet but, 3750 rpm @ 80 mph?? This is so low geared by comparison to the other.  I've also experienced continental drift faster than acceleration away from the traffic lights.

Having said all that, I consider this a happy ending to the traumatic start of this thread, and I think me and this Scorp' will get along ok.

Best wishes to all

Geoff (A happy Scorpio driver)

Geoff, if you would like to see a colour on the Scorpio, let me know and I'll show you in virtual 3D ;D. It's a model I did for a game, it's back somewhere in the 'off topic' forum if you look.

The 2.0 8v is low geared and the one I drove was slow compared to the 2.3. It's got the 4.27 diff with the 5 speed box, lower diff would give you the refined 2600rpm cruise of the 2.3 but kill the 0-60 time completely.

But, it's a Scorpio and still a bargain drive, breathtaking accelleration isn't everything - it should prove a workhorse :)

Regards, Bruce.
