Title: Possibly the end...
Post by Penguin on Mar 9th, 2007, 10:25am
Very bad news I'm affraid.  Car's recently been in for a water leak, traced to the header tank itself, header tank changed, pressure check done and ---

-- after a little bit of diagnosis ---

head gaskets failing.  :-[

I have the car back today and tomorrow I will take it back to the garage (thus giving my mechanic the chance to work out how much it will cost to do and if he find a replacement engine for less) but I'm guessing that this may be an unecomincal repair.

It's been a good year and a quarter so it's pity.  If that's the end I'll sell it for spares or repairs (still runs fine at present if the water is topped up).  I'll let you know tomorrow what happens.

Cheers

Penguin

Sorry to hear that you are having grief. I know we all go pale when people mention RadWeld so I wont mention it but if you think it is terminal and you are talking a different engine anyway, as a last resort why not consider an additive such as Bars Leaks, it may just do the trick.

I guess others will comment.

hi there

what sort of diagnostics did he do? was it the chemical test (checking co in the header tank)?

Hi,

yep, worth getting a second opinion, my cossie engine has been written off by various garages in the 1 year i have owned it, twice as hgf, but has always been something fixable (burst pipe, fpr, blocked cat.....)

dont want to give false hope, but make sure its definately that before you kill it.....

cheers

My advice. Buy another one (Car OR Engine), in running order and scrap the other one for spare parts.

Much cheaper, and less hassle in the long run.

I gave up doing uneconomical repairs some years ago, as it's like pouring cash down a drain.  ;)

Unfortunately garages do get things wrong often enough to be a nuisance. I had an omega with what the garage thought was a head gasket failure, got a second opinion and it was the oil cooler, still quite expensive but alot cheaper than doing the head gaskets!  ;)

That's a shame mate.....just when you think you've solved one problem, a bigger one pops up  :(

Geoff mentioned putting Bars leak in (slapped wrist)...but he may be on the right track.

Even though Bars, Wynns, Radweld will only last temporarily, there is a product on the market which is supposed to be a permanent fix, & if your head gaskets are only just starting to fail, then some of this stuff might do the job.

http://www.k-seal.co.uk/k-seal.html

Apparently, it contains very small slivers of metal that work themselves into cracks in blocks, heads & gaskets, thus sealing them up permanentely  8)

They also sell another product called Seal-Up, which looks just as good  :)

For £9.95, you may as well give it a go....I would  ;)

P.S.....I've seen it in my local car spares shop, so I reckon that most good car spares shops should have it  :)

Okay so it's been back to the garage today and my mechanic advises that it's in such good shape otherwise it ought to be kept.

The bill will about £900 (including a new radiator) and I'm certain I can't get another  one for that money (well not one that's guaranteed decent), so I'm going to bite the bullet and patch it up.

As such one more Scorpio survives yet.  :)

Cheers

Got her back last Friday. Mechanic a bit exasperated with Ford because, having finally finished changing the gaskets and the radiator and the timing chain he found he couldn't get one little hose that needed changing and apparently he'd had this rather surreal conversation with them with went along the lines of...

Mechanic - "You're saying you don't make this hose any more?"

Ford - "That's right, it's discontinued."

Mechanic - "Then why do you still make the gasket set, isn't it likely a blown head gasket will also break the hoses?"

Ford - "Yes but... er... it's very rare for an independent mechanic to work on a Scorpio."

Mechanic - "So what would you say if a car had this problem."

Ford "We'd tell the customer to buy a new car."

In the end he got a hose for a Mondeo and modified it to fit.  Seems to be fine so far.

However despite all that I now have her back and she's now quieter, faster and doesn't belch smoke or leak water everywhere.  I'm very glad I kept her though, Scorpios are fantastic cars. :)
