Title: New member and new owner.
Post by amigafan2003 on Sep 16th, 2007, 9:22pm
Just dropping into say hi :-)

Okay, here's my new car (Ultima 24v) to replace my Mondeo runabout - just to travel too and from work (the Westfield is still my "fun" car for the weekends).

Few things to sort - rear arches starting to scab up, superficial rust on a couple of points at the bottom of the sills.

I "think" it may have a timing chain rattle.  I say think because if you start it up from cold, there is no rattle what so ever.  However, when it is warm, there is an intemittent and slight rattle.  Very hard to hear and deffinately cannot be heard in the thingypit.  I'm going to order all the needed parts from Ford and change the chains myself on one long weekend.  It made the 270 mile journey from Essex to Blackpool no probs though.

Front discs and pads could do with replacing - there is a slight "judder" when braking.

Oh, and it's missing the drivers side door bin - I'll post on the wanted section for one :-)

Other than those points, it's a really nice car - gearbox is faultess, all the electric toys work as does the air con.  Paint is very good apart from the afforementioned slight rust in a couple of places.  The interior is IMMACULATE!

Overall, it's in about the same condition as my first Sierra was and I ran that for 9 years!  I might have paid a bit too much for it (£1200) but I needed a car for work and there aren't too many Coswrths around any more.

HI and welcome

nice looking car you got there, is it a private plate or one of the rare S reg cars?

what happened to the ariel?

ive done a fair bit of work on the 24v, the chains are not an easy job, if your gonna do it with the engine in the car i recomend taking the radiator out, the one you can see is the air con rad, not the engine coolant ;), best to whip the lump out but thats a pain too! and dont move the engine wireing loom to much, the cable insulation will drop off and then you'll hvae all sorts of probs!

Original plate - must be one of the rare ones :-)  Oh, and there was no aerial - replacement on order.  Prev owner took it off at a car wash and forgot where he put it!

Chains are gonna have to be done with the engine in situ - thanks for the tip about removing the rad though ;-)  If I could find a reputable local mechanic (Blackpool area), I'd be quite happy to pay someone else to do it!

the general buzz round here is dont trust a mechanic, 99% of them dont know what they are doing with the cossie lump, and just the name Cosworth will make most garages bump the prices up, if you handy under the bonnet, do it your self, there are some very good manuals on the main site http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/CosV6manual.htm they are in PDF format

Matt :)

Welcome,  nice photographs.

If you're  gonna  tackle  dem   debil  timing  chains,  ( see,   if  you'd  bought a  nice  simple  4 pot  Scorp  you wouldn't   have  this  prob  ;D )     then   how  about  a  photo   feature ?

That's an idea - I'll do a wirte up like I did with my Pinto for the Westfield:-

In fact, I might even add some Piper cams and raise the compression a little - might do a complete rebuild job.

Nice one - looks to me like you should have no trouble with the timing chains or anything else.
look forward to the rebuild

Alastair
