Title: End of an era... Another Bites the dust!
Post by paulscorp on Mar 21st, 2008, 11:10am
Well guys, not been around on site much of late, but just thought i'd put a quick note up here.

Its finally time for the old boy to go. The poor car has just got too tatty and needs a fair few parts now and is not really financially viable to carry on. Still got loads of bits in the shed but ironically not what I need. If only I hadn't sold the parts that I had!!!

Its still sat outside my house, just trying to pluck up the courage to weigh him in  :-[.  He will be sorely missed and has been a great car to us, which has served us well.

It is a shame as there are still lots of bits that may be useful to people but just dont have the time to break it.

Anyway, another one bites the dust. WHAT A SHAME!!

regards

Paul

Paul, That is sad news indeed!. Shame you can't make one more meet at Badgers. As you will see there is one on 30/3 and hopefully all the usual suspects will be there. You will see that CB1 and CB2 are living up to their titles but recompense in the form of beer will be sought!!. Best wishes for the future to both you, Russ and your families. Mike.

Mike, great to hear from you. Yes very sad but I guess its a natural progression. Its just time for it to go.

Would love to pop along to another meeting but I would have to come in new car, its not quite the same turning up in anything other than a scorp! Couldnt do 30th as off to Brands Hatch for the touring cars, but maybe the next one.

I'll be digging through the mass of bits in the shed in the coming months and having a sort out. I'll then give the guys on here a chance to grab what they want (if anything) and then ebay and finally the local tip.

Anyway hope you and yours are well. good to see you are still on the front line of the scorp world here.

regards

Paul

Aye, it's been good but the window is closing now I think. Used to see hundreds around here but gradually noticing less and less :(

I enjoyed mine for the 2 1/2 years I had it. I still have a nosey around whenever the local dealer has one for sale (esp. a 2.3 or cossie), makes me feel quite nostalgic seeing them all old and tatty when I still remember the first one I ever saw back in 1994 (aubergine 2.0 Ultima, cream fabric, phonedial wheels...) and pestering the guy who owned it to let me sit in the driver's seat ::)

Ahh well, back to 2008 :-/

Cheers guys, it's been great ;)

Regards, Bruce.

Paul,
sorry to hear the news. What'll you use now to get around in such comfort?

Well as the years roll by it gets harder and harder to source reasonably priced bits and for a car that was only manufactured for such a short time its only going to get harder i guess. Then there's the bug bear of spending such money on a (in my case) 12 year old car. Unfortunately, Ford over the years have put less and less standard creature comforts unless you want to pay a premium to have them added. Which brings me to the point pegasus made. What will I be using to drive around in such comfort?? Well the answer is, I won't be driving around in such a manner. I have, quite reluctantly, become a mondeo owner! Its an 07 plate and don't get me wrong, the car itself is fine. The problems is........its not a Scorp!!! But at least I have traditionally stayed with the Ford clan. I really will miss the old beast, but as I speak I still haven't had the heart to drive it to the scrapper  :-[. Maybe, just maybe I'll have a change of heart and replace the bits needed if the wife doesn't get to it first!

And Bruce is right....the window is closing. Having said that, I took my son to the scrapper a week or so ago, and I saw a 2.3 estate in there with a facelift front!!! lights, bumper (although a little scratched) and grille. I was sorely tempted to ask the guy how much he wanted for them and put them on here, but in the end just walked out empty handed. Anywho, they are still there as far as I know.

While some may regard the old Scorp to be an acquired taste, and I have to admit, even I had to get used to looking at the bug eyes with affection, I really think its still a good looking car that was maybe made a little ahead of its time. Mine had had a hard life and treated me well, and I can honestly say I've enjoyed the time I spent in it.

As I said at first, its the end of an era. R.I.P. (sob sob)  }{

regards

Paul

Yeah, I migrated to Mondeo too. It doesn't drive as well and not as comfortable, it's a lesser car in every respect. But it's cheap and reliable and more rugged, probably because it's a d**n sight simpler (mine doesn't even have AC or ABS).

The Scorp probably felt a lot faster compared to the Mondeo than it really was, it had a lot more torque and although the Mondeo is shorter geared it really lacks grunt. That said, it does exactly what it says on the tin and it's easy to live with and does a constant 35-40mpg, which goes a long way when it's a daily driver.

Even the Mondeo will have to be retired eventually though, it's been good but it's going to need a new clutch within the next year, getting quite grabby and juddery on cold starts and 1st and 2nd gear are getting stiff...a job I'm not looking forward to and then there's general wear and tear stuff where parts are getting scarce. Someone popped the front bumper a few weeks back, I had to search around just to find a new one in primer for the Mk1 so I could paint it up.

The Scorpio is a proper car that they just don't make any more. It's been said the time for the Granada sized exec saloons has gone but now Ford has offloaded Jag and LR to Tata, I wonder if we still might see another Ford a size up from the Mondeo, Mondeo will never be a rival for the E Class/ 5 Series no matter how much they repackage it. People say the tide has changed and Ford couldn't compete with the Germans for badge status or the Eastern imports for cost, but I wonder. They only made the Scorp for 4 years and they still sold nearly 100k of them, not bad going for what was really a niche product..

Anyway, best of luck Paul :)

Regards, Bruce.

Me too. Obviously, it's difficult to do a true comparison. One's a family car and the other's a limousine.
However, if I compare my Mondeo 2.0 Ghia auto with the Scorp 2.0 estate, I personally feel that there's not a huge amount of difference other than the physical size. If anything, the Mondeo feels livelier (power/weight ratio?). To be fair though, I never did get the Scorp engine properly fixed.
In all honesty, if I had to choose between the joy of driving the Scorps  in between breakdowns and the (so far) dependability of the Mondeo , head rules heart.
The estate still sits on the front and I know I must grasp the nettle as it's in the way. It would be criminal to scrap it for what is probably a minor problem but what do you do?
Nobody can fix the b----y things!   >:(

Well its finally time. MOT and tax run out next week so Sunday is the day of reckoning. Although I am happy to say that all is not lost. I don't have to weigh him in now as a friend just picked up an N reg scorp and wants mine to pull apart and put bits on his, so the old boy will live on in another body. Will still be a sad day, but enough is enough.

R.I.P. pauly scorp
